Meditation techniques - what you use and why

What do you find to be the most succesful meditation techniques? Do you find that visualization is important - like waking up early and visualizing your day or where yo want to be in 5 years. What do you find works for you and why?

Hi there,

I had been looking for different mediation techniques till I found one that suited me quite well. And it's true I did a research on yoga-meditations, western mysticism-meditations, parapsychology, and so on...

First off look inside your head to know what the main inner lines are. I mean, if you're more likely to use eastern-like techniques, western-ones or what.

The best approach would be to practice them for some time till you understand the basis of each one of them.

In my case I needed one which would mix appropiately all the points I had in my head. It was one called "Inner guide meditation" by Ed Steinbrecher.

Anyway before planning to do any practice there're always some preliminaries: breathing, visualization, relaxation,... Don't even forget the all powerfull effect of breathing (do some practice on pranayama) because you can pass from a bad mind state to an another powerful one.

The Present Moment

Over the years I tried quite a few techniques before settling on the one I use now. My thoughts are very persistent -- at the outset I can't concentrate on my breath or anything else -- so I observe the thoughts. It usually takes 10-15 minutes before the smoke/dancing flame appears, and then I switch my attention to the breath.

Hi Ryuji,

The best book I have seen which teaches meditation is:

"Teach Yourself to Meditate: Over 20 Exercises for Peace, Health and Clarity of Mind" by Eric Harrison.

I'd recommend this to anyone as it cuts through the dogma attached to most meditation and describes the main types of meditation, with step by step instructions on how to do them.

An excellent read.

I would like to try but I dont know very much about meditation.

i know a little about hypnotic state because I done several LD this past day.

It was weird because I didnt interest myself to lucid dreaming (I was more on OBE) but I know them but I have done them with an absolute level of lucidity , that mean you enter the dream and your lucid at the beginning.

I done them like that without much knowing them . ;/

So now and into that too with OBE and I think they are so fun too. You can do what you want.

Everybody have to try.

The focus object is the tool used to clear the mind in focus based meditation (be the focus breath, sensation, an object, music, smell, visualisation, mantra etc).

Each time the mind wanders, one simply moves back to the focus object. Each time thoughts enter the mind, one moves it abck to the focus. If the mind is distracted 50 times in one session, each time the mind is moved back to the focus.
With experience one finds the mind being distracted less and less, and as the meditative state deeps there can seem to be a merging of observer and the observed (focus).
Meditation at it's core is really relaxed focused awareness. To achieve this state a focus is used. Letting the mind wander or getting caught in hypnogoic imagery etc is daydreaming not meditation.

There are many different meditation techniques. When chosing you should first think about the goal. "Why do you want to meditate? What for?" When you know that, it will be easier to find the right technique.

Yup Tom is right. Try as many techniques as you can and see which one is right for you.
For example, breath meditations can really ground you and increase bodily sensory awareness tremendously. Wheras visualisation based meditations can leave you feeling dreaming but intensify emotions.

Nb the above examples are effects produced in me ymmv.

How can you tell if your in a theta state or not? Like when I listened to the meditating track "Inner Mind" after a couple of minutes I felt a pull between my eyes (3rd eye I assume) and my eyes something flicker a bit in that state, does that mean I am in deep theta state?

Also, can some very experienced meditators be in Delta state and still alert?
