My advice to anyone starting out with meditation is to check out the following book:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0749913282/026-1471947-1498816

It gets to the core of it without adding dogma or philosophies, and will have you meditating to a high standard quickly.
A lot of what I come across online misrepresents what meditation is, and some is actually not meditation. It's more relaxed daydreaming.

But the above book is one of the best I have come across for people new to meditation.

i have recently started with CSM (clinically standardized meditation) developed by dr. patricia carrington. It's been only 10 days so i cannot say much.
"What are you doing here, Nasrudin? his neighbor asks. "I'm looking for a key which I lost
in the wood?" Nasrudin replies. "Why don't you look for it in the wood?" says the neighbor,
wondering at Nasrudin's folly. "Because there is much more light here"

ive done a few replies bsically covering my style of meditating

When I wake up in the day... I focus on a spot that interests me... randomly. (for im always trying to figure stuff out)

When im specifically meditating... i never sit uncomfortably. I wait for a spot to activate, and then I work with the awareness it sends out. I dont try to control it.

I sometimes use commands / encantations to occupy my mind. "Here" and "Stop" is my favorite.

I do these 2 most of the time. I lay down either on my back with pillow slightly under shoulders or on my front with head to the left.

Energy sensations are most easy to feel in these optimal body positions. Lying on your back is great to develop fetus-breathing.

Hi malganis,

How are you finding it so far? I ask as when I first started to learn about meditation I bought a pack on CSM which included audio tabes and a book. If i'm honest, I didn't give it long enough back then to see how effective it is.

i like it. I started imediatelly meditating 2x a day for 20 minutes because i'm not a total beginner at it. I find the meditation quite easy. You choose a mantra you like and then you repeat it when it enters your mind. You should not force yourself to think it which i still do sometimes. You should just observe your thoughts and feelings and not cling on them. There are few more ways of meditating described back in the manual which have more to do with focusing on the breathing.

The accommodation period is 3 weeks so after that time i could say more. For now i did not notice any perceivable change. It actually says that noticeable effects would show up after 4 months of regular meditation. I will stick to it for that time and that decide if i will stay with it.

I use self-hypnosis to meditate. I also try to imagine a full detailed astral voyage in my mind. It helps to put more detail but if u have trouble keeping a consistent rythem then just simply think of what u are going to do. You would be suprised on how many times u can do this in a day. You can do it while getting a tan at the pool, holding ur breath in a pool competition, at commercials, inside a long trip in the car or a bus, when u are bored, before u go to sleep, on the treadmill( lol, but pls be aware on the speed u are going), basically when u want to take ur mind of something stressful and place in a peaceful journey through a beautiful land.

MisterJingo:
Thanks for the recommendation. I ended up buying a different book by the same author (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1569752753/002-0029952-3056054) and so far I really like it.

meditation is just a certain state of mind u will learn to retain. atleast for me.

and once u can hold on to that feeling, it's amazing, undiscribable.
