I have begun to notice a slight problem with me hopes to AP.  I have major trouble sleeping, and am on meds for this.  The problem is this... if I take the meds, I am to tired to do much practice at night.  I usually just fall asleep practicing.  If I don't take the meds, I don't really sleep well at all.  I kind of doze off, and wake up, and doze of and wake up, and in the morning, I feel awful.  Does anyone else have a problem like this, and does someone know what I should do?
Thanks, Chantal.

I wouldn't mess with any prescriptions you might be on, since your doctor knows best.  But there is an over the counter sleep aid that is also a naturally ocurring neurotransmitter in your brain - melatonin - that helps to regulate sleep.  It has also been suggested that melatonin 'might' help to induce OBEs, but there is no real information to supprt this.  There is another neurotransmitter that has been associated with altered states that is closely related to mealtonin called 'metatonin' and although this is not available as a supplement, I read somewhere that melatonin levels are what regulate metatonin levels... so take from that what you will.  But melatonin has worked to help people fall asleep and stay asleep without any side effects.

Projection is about entering the trance state, in between sleep and wakefulness, wherehas sleep medication is about knocking yourself unconscious so you can't keep yourself awake. They're not compatible...

Not compatible.  Yes, that is what I was begining to suspect.  Me being who I am thouhg, I am not willing to give up just yet.  Do you think I may get somewhere if I took the meds after practicing?

Mez

well you could just practice without any meds like... one night of the week. haha.

Take magnesium to calm the body down and get off of those meds.

I will give that a try.  I suppose I must be able to buy that at any pharmacy.  I would love to get off the meds.  They make me so tired all the time.  I sleep for so long at a time, and am still sleepy a lot of the time.

No, No, No.  I am saying 'Get away from the pharmaceutical industry.'  You know what that's done to you!  Try to find a natural magnesium, not pharmacological bs.

You know, sleep problems usually have daytime implications.. About how you handle stress for instance... Perhaps it could be a good motivator to try and manage your stress better, so you can have a rested mind that doesn't constantly worry. For instance, do not keep a computer or other things that catch your attention within the room you sleep in -- if you take ambien, I think the booklet has something about that, like "the bedroom is only for sleep and sex" ; it's extremely good advice.

If it's a physical problem, think about what you could do that would make it easier to sleep. Invest in a softer mattress, quit smoking, stay away from caffeine and high sugar foods after 6 p.m., etc...

You might even want to go as far as changing careers, or seeing a therapist on a weekly basis.

There's just no words to express how important it is to sleep correctly for one's overall well-being... Over our lives, we often learn a lot of bad sleep habits; the most common being that we place no importance in sleep and focus solely on how time slept is time lost, which is actually very far from the truth.

One of the keys to projection is just that; learning proper sleep methods.

and take some magnesium to replace the magnesium drained from the body by stress and caffeine and liquor and cokes and ...

Last night I did not take my meds.  BAD idea!  I thought I would have a good chance to practice, but I could not unwind well enough to do much.  I did meditate though, but I think I am doing just as well with the pills.  I think I need to look at other things, like my level of stress and such, and I also need to relaz more.  I like the idea of trying magneseum too.  Anyone know where I can buy that?

kiwibonga

Bananas are known for their high magnesium content... No need to buy pills, just eat bananas...

I will have to try that.  Thanks for the tip.

Have u thought about trying melatonin?  It is also a natural supplement - melatonin is the natural enzyme that regulates sleep.  It is produced normally by the brain when in darkness, however in people with insomnia, they don't produce enough.

I have thought about it and would like to try it, if I can find some in my town.  I don't know how common it is.
