Hi haven't seen this posted here so I thought I'd provide a link to Derren Brown's recent stunt where he fooled a woman into thinking she'd had a car crash & NDE.

It was very cleverly done.

i wonder why she didn't freak out   :-P

Thanks for posting the link 007 - it was one I wanted to watch but sadly missed.

I don't think I'll be volunteering to take part in any of his Trick or Treats - that must have been so traumatic for her - I just don't think she believed it was really happening.

We all find nonsenses to believe in; it's part of being alive.

That must of been intense for her, I believe it was traumatic for her,
different people deal with certain situations differently, she was definetly completely flabbergasted.

How did they get her to fall asleep??

That's one of the ethical problems with memory recovery in pscyhoanalytic psychology. Memory can be influenced. Elizabeth Loftus is a major researcher on the issue.

So w8, if there's a shocking experience the unconscious can shift beliefs?
Like, changing personality and view of morals?

Awakened_Mind

If there's a traumatic experience the individual can repress the memory of it. However studies have shown that memories can be implanted. One woman was convinced she used to be a schizophrenic with 228 different personalities! This raises obvious ethical considerations, we can't have legal cases where women think they have been raped when it hasn't actually happened.

People don't necessarily become dissociated from the current personality, more they are under the impression certain traumatic experiences happened to them when they are in fact, not true.

How can something stay isolated in the memory without influincing the personality?
Or changing/shifting any idea's of sexual desire?
Or does it?

It is worthwile to see Deren's other stunts, to learn about the power of subliminal suggestion.

We should also be aware of the fact that we are bombarded every day with subliminal messages in the media. Maybe once we know some of the techniques used we can defend ourselves?

It does influence the personality and, depending on the traumatic experience, sexuality also. The memory is repressed, meaning the person is not consciously aware of it, even though it is an element which is dramtically influencing the psyche.

IMO they need to be dealt with or understood by the individual. Having said that, some people live out their lives without acknowledging the existence of the memory which they probably only really see in dreams, vividly. Current methods aren't suitable and definately need review. That's the main issue with repressed memory therapy.

Wait, what you just said it right, dreams fill up a great part of how we look at things in our normal lives.
Things we see in dreams form our maps, that's awkward, how come this only happens when we are unconscious?

Awakened_Mind

Well I suppose in a dream we are slightly conscious. Otherwise we wouldn't remember the experience of the dream itself.

I'm not too familiar with the notion of 'maps'?

Just like a physical map of Germany, your brain makes a mental map of reality.

Awakened_Mind

That seems a little problematic given that the terrain of Germany can be traversed whereas reality is not as easily explored.

I've seen mental maps in mathematics. This is what you do to x to get to y.

Could you elaborate a little more on the 'map theory'? Is there a website on it perhaps?
