Though thats a good question. I'm interested to see if anyone shares any interesting information.

Personally from what i have seen it does seem to becoming more well known.

There was a time when this type of information was kept secret. You had to join a secret society and work your way up in the ranks to learn it. It's only in the last 125 or 150 years that is has become more public, and also more scientific (as far as explanations). With the internet, more people know about it than ever.

At the same time, for most, it's still not easy. It's still not widely accepted. And religion is still afraid of it. And with more info comes a billion misconceptions and superstitions surrounding it. I think as far as our society is concerned, it will only be a widespread reality when there is some sort of machine that makes it a fast process with little to no work on the projectors part.

One last thing - just because you know about it doesn't mean you can do it. I think that's why they made them work for it back in the day. It's not information meant to go in one ear and out the other.

Yes and the internet has been the most important reason for change.
The amount of discussions about OBEs has increased dramatically during the last few years because of the internet. This has led Many more people to attempt an OBE. Which has led Many more people to consciously have an OBE. There are also Many more methods and techniques (some good, some not so effective) of inducing an OBE.
All this means that the amount of knowledge has dramatically increased. And most of this is good practical knowledge.
OBE is still Not a part of the mainstream of modern society. It is still on the fringe of everyday life. But it has become more popular and continues to grow, thanx, in large part to websites like AstralPulse.

The discovery of altered states is indeed very ancient. Some things about it have improved some have gone worse.
I guess when it was discovered (may be in India or Central America), it was akin to magic etc, less of a science and more mysticism.
But I'm aware that great masters have taken it to its pinnacle during pre-religion era (may be around 3000 years ago), mostly in India. After the arrival of organized religion, it broke down to pieces, with everyone trying to control the knowledge and distort it for their own interests.

After industrial revolution and advancement of science, it faded away into remote corners of society and this knowledge was concentrated in a few hands. Advances in printing, and now internet revived the interest of public in this subject again, and we are seeing improvements and advances in this field again.

What is lost now are the teachings, true meaning of those teachings and the great discoveries made by ancient pioneers.
