Finally, some one else who has a head on their shoulders. I didn't mean that the Roman Empire was a bad thing, I just used it as an example of how destroying industry would set us back and our quality of life would be like the Romans or worse (obviously we have a better quality of life than ancient peoples). The Romans did do alot for us, heck they nearly sparked an industrial age 2000 years ago.

Life was never good in the past.

Life will never be good in future.

Life can never be good.

Suffering is a part of life - an inherent feature of life. Suffering can never be eliminated.

There is Physical suffering - There is Mental suffering.

In pre-industrial society there were physical diseases caused by virus and bacteria.
In modern society there are hundreds of lifestyle related physical diseases - Cancer, Stroke, Diabetes, Obesity, Multiple Organ Failures.


Mental suffering will always exist. It exists in agrarian society. It exists in industrial society. As soon as we stop working we experience mental suffering.

We avoid mental suffering by working ceaselessly.

There is no higher purpose behind work.

People do not work because they want to work.
People work because they cannot stop working.

The energy generated by the food we eat forces us to work ceaselessly.

Energy = Energy[Physical Work] + Energy[Mental Work] + Energy[Suffering/ Subjective Experience]

All three energies on the right side are inversely proportional to one another.

When we do hard physical work or hard mental work or a combination of physical work and mental work almost all energy is used up in doing work.

When we stop physical work and mental work the unused energy is experienced as suffering/ anxiety/ restlessness/ discomfort. This suffering is so intense - so unbearable - that most people cannot stop physical activity and mental activity simultaneously for even 2 minutes.

People do not work because they want to work.
People do not work for their family.
People do not work for their nation.
People do not work for any reason.

People work because they cannot stop working.

It does not matter what kind of work we do - whether it is physical work or any kind of mental work. As soon as we stop working we suffer from restlessness, anxiety, uneasiness and discomfort.

[ In Yoga and Meditation the goal is to stop Physical Activity and Mental Activity simultaneously - and then transform the subjective-experience of restlessness/ anxiety/ suffering into peace. This requires ability and years of effort ]

For most people it is a choice between physical and mental work.
The switch-over from physical work to mental work is disastrous for the planet.

Man can do the same physical work every day.
Man cannot do the same mental work every day.

When man used to do physical work ( farming and related activities ) he could do the same repetitive work day after day- generation after generation.

After the Industrial Revolution when man switched-over to mental work he began a never ending process of making new machines / things / products-- a process which can only end with the complete destruction of environment ( planet ).

When society switches over from physical work to mental work it starts making thousands of consumer goods. People start calling them necessities. They are not necessities at all - 90% of consumer goods that we see today did not exist 50 years ago.

Food, Water, Air, Little clothing, Little Shelter - these are necessities.

Close your nose and stop breathing for a few minutes - you will then know what necessity is.

Stop drinking water for a few days - you will then know what necessity is.

Stop eating food for a few days - you will then know what necessity is.

Today people are making thousands of consumer goods - not because they are necessities - but because they cannot stop making them. People cannot stop doing work - After switching over to mental work they will keep on making thousands of unnecessary consumer goods. This is the reason why the switch-over from physical work to mental work is so destructive. This is the point of no-return - once this is crossed the destruction of Environment/ Nature is inevitable.

If we live a simple life there is individual suffering - but no largescale destruction of Environment.

If we live a consumerist life there is individual suffering - plus largescale destruction of Environment.

It's not that I stopped believing, or even conformed, no, but I learned that the message goes to everyone or no one. No one is happy with the abuse of the resources and the contamination of the environment, but euphoric words won't change the course of things. The best you can do is become a living example for the others, and hopefully they will follow, but even if they don't, know in your mind that you're doing the best that you can, and that's the most you can wish for. You're really not alone in this.

It aslo dosen't change the fact that you are being extremely hypocritical, as you have a computer on your 'table' right now and I'm sure you have many other technological things that you do not need. in fact the only way your not being hypocritical is if you build your own house out of mud and sticks and carve spears to hunt your food with. And that is a fact.

I find it ironic that you have no concern/ compassion for Environment despite the fact that you owe your very existence to nature/ environment.

You don't understand if we change the system now, everyone will be depressed and unhappy.
These things take time to change and I don't see why we would change.
And besides, some people want to learn the truth about our existence, if people like you take that away, you take away that whole purpose.
We need an industrial society to figure out the truth.
What gives you the right to take that away?

If you take away everything of this society, the idea of attraction male/female will shift also depending on make-up and clothes.
People will get more depressed if they can't get their sexual needs.
And besides the status-hiërarchy is build on having more consumer goods than other people.

Another thing is: Most people want to change the political system to shift the idea of the status-hiërarchy to make their own position the highest.

And your idea of "great" is just a simple reflection of your status in this society.
Nothing is better than the other, people will always be unhappy, and some people will stay happy.
If you fail in this society, you will fail in your society when people with more ambition get the higher status  and beat you at your own game.

But modern society which was busy chasing progress, growth and development did not listen. It refused to believe there was any environmental crisis or problem. It said science and technology will always find a solution - if earth gets destroyed we will move on to another planet.

Impossible dreams were sold to people in the name of science and technology.

Moving to another planet would probably rank as the most impossible of all impossible things.

One space shuttle exploded during take off - another exploded on the return journey.

So far man has not been able to go beyond the moon. There is no other life sustaining ecosystem/ planet within the solar system. Outside the solar system planets and galaxies are millions of light years away - billions of light years away.

So when are we moving to a new home ?

Next year - or 5 years later ?

The other day I had something strange happen. I was riding my bike late at night - nothing special - when something changed in my mind and I went into this state where I understood the planet was a living thing, and I got feelings from it. (this was completely unprovoked and I still don't know how it happened)

I found myself looking through the past, feeling the memories of what went on centuries ago when there were no cars or planes or factories anywhere. The ecosystem was very complex - the radiation from the sun over the meadows and the countless plants and the bugs here and there, the pollen and ions in the wind. Everything very alive and very active. It was like another planet - very different from the 'nature' you see when you drive out to the park or to the country in our current time, now that the systems have been broken down into a dry, lifeless stupor.

But during my few moments in this state, something else became clear: There were conflicts between animals, the bugs were fighting, the mammals ate each other, the plants had thorns, there were widespread fights between species. While it's all very fascinating from the perspective of an intelligent being, the creatures living in it were less than amused.

Our planet, while alive, was always a bit demented.

That's why the industrials don't think twice before knocking down a forest. You have to think: Was the world so much better before? There used to be bears and wolves where I live now. The natives were always dying of disease and starvation, and killed each other as well as the animals. There were always physical and psychic predators everywhere. The order may have been upset by the industrials, but it wasn't a very pleasant order.

There's a reason the environmentalists aren't stopping the destruction. If they wanted, they could drag the industrials into the streets tomorrow and paint the city with their blood, and we could go back to the old ways. But we don't want to go back to the old ways, do we?

What we want is something new. Something that's better than the old ways and better than the ancient ways.

I had the impression industrialism is pretty much over.  It's heyday was when mechanization was seen as the answer to all our problems and political systems reorganized themselves to make this 'dream' happen.  Both communism and capitalism (as we have it now, with multinationals mechanizing all aspects of production, and humans almost exclusively dedicated to sell the products of this mechanization.) were designed for this- but now we have come to understand that the industrial revolution is over and nothing improved in general- we don't have more food, more time for art and other enrichment activities, more anything else.  So now we're moving away from it.
The question is, towards what?  I've heard it be said that this is the beginning of the 'communication' era- that information is treated as a commodity as much as manufactured goods used to be.  The  question is, is this true, and if it is, what does this mean for the world, and all those that live in it?

Hmm, communication sounds good to me. Toppling the hierarchy and all. My hope for the future is that people will drop centralized governments and capitalist/socialist/communist social systems (all of which function on the "you'll work because I tell you to" philosophy) and instead form cause-driven societies. That is, organizations of people working toward common agendas, cooperating with whoever they want to cooperate with - not whoever they're forced to cooperate with.

I think it could work because that's how the more intelligent humanoids tend to function. Some of their societies have no crime, few conflicts, and no need for currency because everything is provided. They aim for common causes, so they're concerned with each other's well-being and not simply burdened by each other like people in our society.

If Industrialization had not happened, High death rate would have kept population of the world under control....Diseases caused by virus and bacteria would have kept population under control.....Feeding capacity of soil would have kept population under control....Shortage of food and water would have kept population under control.....Harsh Climatic Conditions would have kept population under control - People would not have been able to live in regions that are too hot or too cold.

If Industrialization had not happened this planet would have been in very good condition today.....There would be no overpopulation, no overconsumerism and only limited urbanization.

A Non-Industrial Society would have destroyed some ecosystems on the land [Forests] but Marine Ecology [Oceans] would have been almost 100% safe today......Forest Cover would be much greater than what it is now....Millions of species on the land and in the sea would not have been decimated and would be thriving with very healthy populations......This planet would be free of Billions of Tonnes of Metal Waste, Plastic Waste, Chemical waste, Gaseous Waste, eWaste and Nuclear Waste.....The Oceans wouldn't have become Acidic, Warmer and Oxygen Deprived because of Industrial Waste.

It is consumerism that destroys environment, Not population.

 My "see through" method of reading things shows me you have a good heart. It also show me your anger and resentment of Humanity. 

I am afraid your words are falling on deaf ears. We can't turn back what has happened already, but we can be mindfull of our future. It starts with simple things like recycling or picking up that plastic bottle lying on the side of the road. If everyone thought of others not just themselves, we would see welcomed change in our World.

Technology is going to continue to advance. Oil is going to continue to be drilled. They have weighed the pros vs the cons and see that right now we need the oil to sustain our current lifestyles. That we need technological advances to move ahead.

Possibly someday Mother Nature will rebel and teach us a lesson we will never forget. But until that day occurs we will keep manufacturing, digging, using and abusing every resource they can find. I know, it's a shame, but that's the reality we live in!

A society that has destroyed all the natural resources of the planet will also destroy itself.

After destroying biodiversity and ecosystems which sustained human life for millions of years man will not exist...It is only a matter of a few years now.
