fonesolo,

Welcome to the forum.

I have been trying to project since 12/08 and have had much success. I am not where I want to be yet and I don't have total control over various aspects of the skill but from what I can tell when I project, it's very real.

I normally have the sense of motion, sight, touch and hearing. I usually don't smell anything. I normally have my full waking consciousness and can think very clear and know my name, the names of friends and family and I know why I came and that my body is in bed asleep. I can logically think about what I want to do and where i want to go and I have my emotions.

I mean in what respect would it not be real? Even if it was a dream, that's real. To say that the Astral Projection experience is not real would mean that I would have to say that waking life is not real.

I think that a better question to ask is what the heck is Astral Projection rather than asking if it's real.

Once you get validations you'll find out.
However, that doesn't mean it's not imaginary, because everything you perceive, whether it's with your five senses or otherwise, has to be processed by the brain to be experienced.  So, the difference is semantical.

It is as real as anything else you can experience.

By the way, before anyone suggests that we only experience this because we have read the details elsewhere, and that is why it all happens for people, I started having this happen to me when I was very little, and had not heard or read anything about any of it. In fact I spent the first 7-10 years of my experiences to myself thinking that either everyone else had this sort of stuff happen to them, and just did not talk about it, or that I was nuts- or a combination of the two.  So, I was not copying anything I had read about. I had to work through it totally on my own.

AP is a very real phenomenon.

However, whatever you experience while in the state of AP, can be a mix of real, imaginary, hallucination, dream and such. Depending on your expertise, chance and lucidity you perceive things.

AP is not subjective at all. When you will experience the vibrations, the separation and if you are lucky when you will see your own body, you will be astonished to know how objective it is.

Before you ask whether something is real, you must define real .....
In the broadest sense of the word, AP exists so its real.

I've had several validations that these phenomena were real.  The most amazing was the time my ex-boyfriend, whom I have remained friends with, showed up in my OBE while I was having an OBE.  He is very advanced in OBEs and APs and told me he wanted us to have an OBE together sometime.  So, while I was having an OBE one evening, a shadowy figure appeared on my stairs and I knew from the silhouette that it had to be him.  I especially recognized the outline of his hair.  A couple of days later after he appeared in my OBE, my ex came over to my house in person and asked me if I had seen him.  And I told him that I knew it was him!  Even more amazingly, he describe exactly what had taken place while we were both sharing an OBE.  This particular experience validated for me that these experiences are indeed real.  And that's not the only validation I've had, either.

Your consciousness is actually a bit more complicated than distinguishing between reality and imagination. That simple distinction something you do while awake and it's vital that you do it constantly to maintain a sound and healthy mind.

When you're asleep, you have the opportunity to make an additional distinction. That is, you can discern your dreams as something different from reality and once again your imagination as something separate.

From there, it seems that there are yet more distinctions, which people seem to have grouped together loosely under the term "astral." They are not real, but you are not imagining them either, and while they may coincide with dreams, they cannot simply or exclusively be called dreams.

Maybe you meant to ask whether claims about supernatural powers, like psychic communication, are justified. Perhaps there are some, but you will have to examine each case and consider the evidence. Don't take it on faith, because then you would be failing to make first distinction mentioned above.
