I think that staring at something like this will have a calming and hypnotic effect, much like concentrating on an object while meditating.  It will focus the mind and might lower the frequency of your brainwaves. In that way it may help to put you in a state of mind which is conducive to astral projection or lucid dreaming. So I don't think it's fake, but it's only an aid, in the same way as binaural audio stimulation is.

Howdy folks this portal is not fake it is only a tool. The best way to use it is to study it for 5 Min's
scan it from top to bottom memorize every detail then go to sleep as usual relax then pull up
the image from memory. Stare into it from your bed before sleep. Its not supposed to suck you into the computer screen or any thing. Just an aid nothing more.
