It must be frustrating when someone takes your culture and turns it into a hollywood blockbuster.

A significant time period for the Maya does end on the date, and enthusiasts have found a series of astronomical alignments they say coincide in 2012, including one that happens roughly only once every 25,800 years.

If you follow up on what the Mayan elders actually believe,  they believe not only that 'a significant time period ends on the date', but that the years surrounding 2012 (including THIS year) will all be years of great transitional change.  They say a lot of things not unlike what the Hopi tried telling the UN.
