Hmm.. I've tried the Ganzfeld effect before. I could see how it works. It really does start to trip you out via sensory deprivation.

You'll need a ping pong ball or something of the same density and material. I tried using a plastic spoon, it worked rather well! although I did look like a complete tool .. as far as wearing objects over your eyes goes!
You'll also need some tape that wont rip your eye brows/skin off when you try and remove the material from your eyes. Don't make the mistake I did. I didn't plan on going for the shaven eye brow look :(

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Cut the ping pong ball in half. Near enough in equal size. (If you are using another object, just make sure it will fit over your eyes nicely)

2. Test the object of your eyes and ensure there are not gaps that you can see through. What is the point in these experiment if you can still see? The point is to deprive your eyes of all sensory input.

3. Attach the adhesive of choice (normally tape) to your chosen objects and make sure the objects fit nice and snug. Or.. as comfortable as wearing ping pong balls on your face goes... hmm lol. (Don't actually stick them on yet, you still need to prepare)

4. If possible, buy a nice red filter for your lamp/light. Not entirely necessary. (just go to youtube and type in 'Red screen')
Normal Red Light (This one is a little too bright.. I tried it and it didn't work as good for me(If you use this, make sure you pause the video))
Flashing Red Light (This one DID work for me and almost put me in a trance! .. really trippy)

5. Put on your favourite static noise.... white, brown and even pink for you adventerous guys out there ;P!
Static Noise

6. Turn off your light/apply the red filter and make sure your room is dark apart from the red light source. (alternatively, if you are using youtube, make sure the video is on full screen.. I made the mistake of this and had already stuck the spoons on my face.. I wasn't pleased)

7. Put your headphones in with the Static playing at a decent volume.

8. Stick on your awesome pingpongface/spooneyes!

9. Relax - allow it to happen.

You will start to feel slightly agitated by the fact that you cannot see any sort of fluctuating sensory input. After awhile you really will start to visualize random things.
You don't HAVE to use a red light source, it can be done in pitch black - apparently.
Make sure you tell us how it went :D

Can this help bring on an OBE?!? seems it could be useful.

Hmm... Well... When I did this, I wasn't really calm.. or in any state to be honest. It's just visual sensory deprivation.
I didn't feel calm or sleepy - I was just seeing things.

I think it might be possible though... If you could get a laptop by the side of your bed possibly.. get comfortable and meditate as usual - It may be a success.
It might even enhance it, since one of your senses are already deprived and ready to refocus onto something else.

Best way to find out? try it :)
I'll try it tomorrow at some point with muh spoon eyes XD

How long did it take for you to start seeing things?

Ruu

Well my first attempt was slightly........... unreliable... since I already had a mild hallucinagen - Took about a minute to really start painting images on that blank canvas :P

Second successful attempt took me about 15 minutes for it to start to kind of work. Then I kind of forgot about time and just listened to the static. I had it on oscillation. Was sitting there for about 30 minutes before I took them off. Vision was blurry and wanted to squint my eyes a lot.

I'd say 20 minutes. It will obviously be much different and probably easier for those of you who are efficient at calming the mind and relaxing the body though - I'm sure.
Also, it's nothing like the visuals you may get on shrooms/lsd or anything. You just start to make lines/objects/patterns from the boredom of not being able to see anything. Eventually the static will play a part in the images and make it more vivid.
