Connections are formed between brain cells. This increases the capacity of the brain. It happens as a result of using the brain. Because parts of the brain are specialized, learning new skills and using them tends to increase specific areas of the brain but not others.

ah memory: how fun. actually, scientists still don't know how the brain stores memories(format), or where(location).

[:D]. i know where (i know where MY mind stores them at least, and it ain't in the brain.[8D])

look within and see the source.

Even though they are not sure where or how the brain stores the information it is a common belief that all the information that you take in gets recorded.  24/7/365.  Every thing you see, hear, touch, every thing, even the stuff you do not realize is there.  The information is there it is just a matter of unlocking it.

The thing to look into is regression.  If you search the web you will find info on both past life and present life regression.  Some is done with the help of another person, like hypnosis, but there are several techniques that can be done by yourself.  The self learning techniques are more geared towards increasing the amount of information you can consiously remember.  Eventually it will lead you all the way back.

Basically neurons are created to increase memory capacity, to save space multiple neurons which serve a certain memory are connected to via several links so you have multiple intertwining roadways so to speak - saves creating the same memory twice. It is my belief however that the brain has a limited capacity, and when that capacity is reached the brain overwrites existing memorys which is why we forget a lot of things and why in old age memory loss is frequent.

Say powder, since you're interested in this topic, AND you're in programming, why don't you consider taking a course in cognitive science?
It deals with stuff like how your mind work and patterns of memory, etc. I only took an intro course in that, so I can't answer your question though.  [:P]
But anyway, even if it doesn't give you an answer to your question, I'm sure you'd find the subject interesting.  [:)]

Anyway, I think the way memory works is by formation of connections between neurons, and also of the frequency and firing patterns between neurons.
So I personally don't think our brain is linear.

I don't know about the brain but according to my beliefs the MIND(not the brain, they're seperate[:)]) records everything and really is the source of all thoughts and emotions.

In a science class we had just seen a video on the brain and it showed an MRI where different parts of the brain "lit up" - so to speak - as different emotions came to pass. But then I asked "but why do those emotions come to be? Those parts of the brain only acknowledge the emotion and carry it out...but where does it start?" and of course the science teacher was dumbfounded [|)].

Now I know - it's the mind that does it all. The brain is just a physical reflection of the mind, and sometimes it cannot hold all that the mind knows. So yeah I can't really answer your question but those are my two cents[|)]

Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

No amount of rigorous training, sitting and doing nothing, and clearing one's mind can help a man who hasn't overcome his doubts.

Its quite shocking how little we know about ourselves. Not to talk
of how little "modern science" knows [B)].

I should look into regression on the Internet, I could always
use some more recollection. And when I get to University I should
also take that cognitive course that Athios recommended.

Fat_Turkey, I had a very similar idea to yours some time ago.
What if the brain is just a primitive device used to upload
and download information from the "higher self"? That would
explain why we use only a small percentage of it... its not meant
to be used [:)].

Thanks for your feedback everyone!

Fat_Turkey

I think the brain is just that and a physical representation/device of the mind. Of course the brain has a lot of problems especially memory recall so...yeah...

Hi everyone!

I am very immersed in programming so dont be surprised at the
weird stuff I'm about to describe [:D].

Assuming our memories get written down sequentially into our
brain, do you think it's possible to "read" the part of the
brain that hasn't been "written" to?

                      MEMORY
#########################[][][][][][][][][][][][][][][][]
^                               ^                 ^
childhood             yesterday          clear neurons

Perhaps there is some interesting garbage that progressively gets
overwritten by our memories ( ultimate truth given to us at birth?).

So that when we remember things we get information from the
"filled" part of our brain, past experiences. Maybe we could
use the remembering process to remember... things that haven't
happened yet, or things that are in our brain at birth.

Do you know of any research into this?
The biggest question is: is our brain structured linearly?[?]
