The paralyzed body state that you experienced is called Sleep Paralysis (SP). SP is actually very common and is sometimes an indication that an OBE is about to occur naturally or that one can be induced deliberately.
So, yes, you were close to having an OBE. If you can find an induction method and stick with it for a few weeks than you might well manage to get out of body.
