I'm Kevin, a sophomore in college, and still relatively new to Astral Projection. Over the past year or so, I've been reading some easy to find material on OBEs. Mostly books by Robert Monroe, William Buhlman, and Robert Bruce. I'm still struggling to achieve a memorable OBE, and I am having difficulty deciphering lucid dreams from OBEs. Most of the time I believe I am not succeeding due to fear.

I suppose I'll share some of my only experiences just so I can get some opinions on whether or not they are OBEs or vivid dreams. Sorry if my terminology is very weak.

- My most recent experience involved myself being in a dream-like state. At first, I was simply dreaming. But then I believe it became lucid. I was suddenly outside of my house in the street and saw two moons above my neighborhood. One was normal, the other was red. As I directed my attention to them, they started to come together and my vision began to blur. I kept telling myself to leave my body and eventually pushed myself up from a face-down sleeping position (no vibrations or sounds were present). I then observed my arm, which was a dull translucent blue, and sat at the edge of my bed. Everything was blurry. I demanded clarity a few times until i achieved it. I then walked (didn't float or fly) to my bedroom door. I reached to touch the door to see if my hand would go through it. It didn't. I was then in a different part of my house back into a regular dream doing normal boring dream things. I know that OBEs are supposed to be rather obvious, but I am not used to them; therefore, I can not tell if this was a dream or not.

- I don't know how this experience came about. I just remember trying very hard to leave my body in the early hours of the morning, while the sun was rising. I was slowly exiting, but it was as if a force of gravity was holding me down. I was very slowly moving upward toward the ceiling, but struggling the entire way. The light in my room was an overwhelming bronze color. i caught a glimpse of a man's head above my dresser. He jokingly winked at me and I was immediately back in my body in a paralysis state. I wanted to leave again, but feared being "stuck" in paralysis, so I convinced myself to fall asleep.

This is a very large message board, so I don't even know where to begin. If anyone here has any good book suggestions, let me know. I bet there are hundreds of works out there that I've never even heard of. I need to practice more and get beyond my fear barrier. I'm also considering trying some of Robert Monroe's Hemi-Sync discs (Are they worth trying out?) I realize that this introduction post may be scattered all over the place, but thanks to anyone who took the time to read this. I hope to stay here a while. Thanks

Greetings eskimoswim
Regarding the experience that you described   -  that certainly appears to have been an OBE.
It Can be hard to distinguish an OBE from a lucid dream. However, if you are fully lucid and aware then Intent is the determining factor. Meaning that if you want to have an OBE then you can shift your consciousness into the out of body state. If you want to remain lucid and basically create your own story line and dreamscape then you can choose to remain in the lucid dream.
Just remember that creating people and objects is more difficult in an OBE as reality is more objective whereas in a lucid dream it is more self made and subjective. So if what you create soon disappears then chances are you have gotten fully out of body.
