Ok, now I'm going to tell you something that is probably contrary to what you've heard.
First of all, you don't induce sleep paralysis to project.  You enter a trance that may paralyze you to project.
When you wake up in sleep paralysis, you usually are in REM, an alpha-type state, which is not lucid, which is probably why you get panicked.  This is not a good time to project, because you are too awake to project but not lucid enough, and often the dreaming mind is still in charge.
To induce trance you can (and this site has many techniques in the tech section) follow some sort of routine that gets you physically and mentally relaxed, then do something to get you in trance, and stay awake- until your conscious awareness changes in such a way that you know you can try an exit technique.
The easiest trance induction technique I know is to get up two hours earlier than normal in the morning, get up, walk around, go back to bed or into a reclined position, and then do a trance induction technique, wait for some sort of symptoms, and then try an exit technique.  If it doesn't work, stay there longer, and try again.  If you believe you are deep enough but nothing happens, get up.  Do not go back to sleep.
That is my advice.
Why?
