in one of RB's writings he mentions a silver cord that connects the astral body to the physical one and that sometimes it can be connected to your third eye. Maybe you were seeing (part of) that cord?

good point dino - i usually always get the white pulsing rings from my third eye, but this was different than that.  even though i was still in my body, it could have been part of the cord.  it was pure white light, so my guess is as good as yours.  either that or, as i said in my explanation, it could've been part of the patterns or bright light that seem to surface around the time of exit

the talk about patterns is that in the past, I've been able to semi-project after seeing patterns in front of my eyes.

       Ok so I think I just figured out the whole concept behind out of body experiences.  Let me start from the beginning.  I got myself meditating, which took me a few minutes for some reason because I couldn't get comfortable.  After a while I finally did, and I was trying to visualize but it wasn't working very well.  So instead, I just started thinking a little and trying to keep a clear state of mind
   It was a peaceful little zone, and every now and then I would remember feeling vibrations.  Since my dream recall has been fading lately, there are a few things about the meditation state I forgot.  As I am writing this, I'm starting to remember more, and I think during the state I got a few clips of nightmares I might have been having recently.  I think my decreased dream recall is from wanting to forget the nightmares, so I need to concentrate on having peaceful dreams.
   I remember sitting there in a very peaceful trance state and feeling almost like my hands were on top of my legs.  I could feel the body heat between my legs and hands, and I think I tried to use this as a way out.  I don't remember what happened next except falling into a deep trance state.  I think this can be easily solved by setting some sort of alarm to snap yourself out of sleep into a trance state where you can project.
   This time, the phone rang, and it snapped me right out of my deep trance where I wasn't really awake anymore.  This is when everything started.  I think I might have been out of body already, because I could feel the difference in the position of my hands.  I ignored the phone in the background and let myself stay in this state.  I had a large amount of white energy radiating from my third eye, and I got a crisp set of imagery.  I don't know what the man was doing, but he was standing outside a truck.  It went slowly further and further away from my line of vision, and I couldn't hold onto it.  At this point, I felt as though I could sense my astral/real-time self, and I felt the vibrations of actually changing states as I went into this body.
   It was at this point that I had the experience.  All of a sudden, I could see everything in my room through my eyelids.  They weren't open, but everything was there, just as described in most of the projection books.  It was weird, because I could even see the outline of my body, but I didn't dare try to move or whatever because that has pulled me out of the state in the past.  I saw a weird white light in my center of vision – it was almost like a sample of a pie chart, and it kept moving around in a circle.  There were some various energy matters floating around that I didn't try to investigate.  I was able to look around and see all the details of the room, and there were some minor fluctuations (like the door didn't want to stay in one place).
   I let go and I felt myself float from my body and move to the right side of the bed.  I tried to "move" and I floated around the foot of my bed where I could see a vague outline of my body still lying there.  I started to drift over to the center of my room , which is where I got a really vivid sense of reality.  I almost seemed to switch from being aware of both bodies to being truly OBE for about 5 seconds.  At this point, I started floating up and over everything, and thought I was going through the ceiling.  I tried to control the movement but it was too difficult, and I thought about my body and snapped right back in.  The vision of the room slowly faded away.
   I still had the white pie chart in front of my eyes, and I tried to figure out what it was.  I decided to see if I could block it out from my line of sight, but I couldn't.  I felt one of the fingers on my right hand twitch, and then the light went away.  It must be something that's connected to the OBE, like those patterns I saw from before but much more intense to allow me to project.
   After this, I physically moved, knowing that I wasn't going to be astral, and there I was in my body.  I realized what just happened and came here to write this right away.  While writing, I also realized that there has to be more than one form of projection.  In other forms of projections, I've experienced 3d reality, or extremely vivid yet dark imagery.  In this case, I stayed in my body and saw through my eyelids.  I think the higher planes are something that our minds can't quite understand through normal terms, and I'm pretty sure I've projected a number of times before this.
