Hello Mayatnik,

There are a couple of things in this rather lengthy introduction of yours that I would like to see clarified, as I believe myself to be one of the "culprits" who have sought to make sure the information being given when using the pendulum is accurate.

Firstly, there is what I see as an inconsistency in your writing:
(I will not put this in the traditional encapsulated quote format as I know you have difficulties in reading this text)
"In the last couple of weeks (at the time of writing) there has grown among several members a significant degree of confusion as to what the Pendulum is all about – and this has now reached such an extent that a couple of members had decided to devise questions and a method to 'test' the validity of the Pendulum to give correct answers. No matter how good the intent, that approach will not work...because (as any Dowser will tell you, and there are a vast number worldwide in virtually every country), the Pendulum has a mind of its own. So, by testing its 'validity' it can only be a test of whether it is worth using or not. And, since the Pendulum has never shown a will to be 'tested', in the many hundreds of years that it's use has been documented, it has invariably given wrong (or 'trick') answers when such an attitude is adopted."

In this statement you are ascribing a form of consciousness to the pendulum itsself - a mind of its own, a will to be tested.

"The Dowsing 'tool', whether it be L-Rod or Pendulum, has its particular uses and methods depending on the field of investigation – but it is always a tool for investigation, and always the accent should be on homing-in on the answer and not blind acceptance of an answer or doubt as to whether the Pendulum is accurate."

Here you describe it as a tool, where a thoughtful approach should be taken whithout blind acceptance of an answer or doubt as to its accuracy. I might not be getting what you mean here but that seems self contradictory.

In my work as a computer technician I use a digital multimeter to test for voltages in a circuit and for correct function of electronic components. If I am unwilling to have this multimeter tested and calibrated by the manufacturer periodically, I cannot trust it to give me accurate information as I require.

The way I see the pendulum, and indeed the way I have used the pendulum in the past, for dowsing chakras, is as an inanimate object that is simply a tool for providing information. It is not itself a conscious entity and I will not treat it as such. When I do use it for dowsing my chakras, I first test and "calibrate" the pendulum by checking its motion on a known good and clear chakra. I then go on to chakras that might be a problem, and because of the preparation of the pendulum I have already done, I can trust that it will give me accurate information.

In this respect, or in the respect that you are presenting the use of the pendulum, which by the way is certainly nothing new or revolutionary as you have quite well pointed out, it is not the pendulum as a tool itself that should be questioned if it is checked and "calibrated" before use.

My greatest concern in this subject has always been with people new to using the pendulum for the purposes of channelling spirits taking due care and caution with the information they are recieving through the pendulum. I have seen blind faith in the answers given. I have seen leading questions used and confirmation bias lead people to answers that should be questioned. If in a particular case someone gets a answer for the affirmative, and they are unsure of the source of that answer, then they should also test the case for the negative to see if the original answer still holds true.

This is not the pendulum as a tool being tested itself, this is the source of the information communicating through the tool that should be questioned. The basic "how to" of using the pendulum, to know how a simple yes or no is indicated, should be well and truly bedded down before trying to channel spirit entities.

To restate my basic views of the pendulum - it is a tool and nothing more. It is up to the individual as to how they use that tool and what they do with the information they gain from it. I have only sought to make people aware of some basic failings in human deductive reasoning that needs to be addressed in any method of research or information gathering.

Kind regards,
James.

quote:
Dowsing was even officially sanctioned by the White House during the Vietnam War for use by the marines. It is documented that the American Military created a Dowsing School to train the marines in Dowsing countermeasures against the Vietcong guerrilla fighters. The Vietcong tactic was to strike suddenly, then vanish into foxholes and networks of underground tunnels or behind false walls in village houses. They also set deadly and varied booby traps. So, the Dowsing School replicated all those situations. The marines were trained to Dowse (they actually used L-Rods, which are very versatile in that type of situation, though the Pendulum can do the same thing). In this way, the marines learned how to locate tunnels and even count how many people occupied the tunnels. They also became skilled in detecting hidden booby traps by Dowsing for them. Captured guerrilla fighters must have been totally perplexed as to how the marines had so easily found them hiding in tunnels and behind false walls. Dowsing helped to win that War, but it was not a weapon of war, nor even to aid the Americans win it – it was solely a means of saving lives that otherwise would have been heavily lost, and so its use was permissible in that situation by the Higher Realms, the 'source' of information give to dowsers through the tools used.

It is interesting to note, however, that despite the enormous and officially acclaimed success of Dowsing in the Vietnam War, the Military no longer sanctions Dowsing simply because the generals found that only 'positive minded' marines could use the Dowsing methods – and the Military wanted every man-jack to be able to use it, just as every one used a rifle... but the Higher Realms did not go along with that, and the non-positive marine could not make neither L-Rod nor Pendulum move, or if it did then it would not move reliably – so the generals took a huff about that and decided that if not all could use it then none would use it in future, and it stopped being 'standard issue'. Again, we have adequate documentation here that the Pendulum (or indeed L-Rod, or even the Y-rod for that matter) will only work if used positively and with great respect for it, and not if abused.

If you dont mind, can you give me some sources for this information on Vietnam?  Im not saying it didnt happen, except maybe for the assertion we won the war.  My dad was a marine in Vietnam so Im not saying that in a negative way.

How did they determine who was a positive thinking marine?  I have to say it is consistent with your teachings it wont move or give accurate information if you doubt it or are not "positive thinking".

I actually have my Bachelors in history and am fascinated by the Vietnam War and have never heard of this era.  I do have access to some primary documents so Im being sincere when I ask for you to point me in the right direction to read up on this.

Hello GOINGSLOW

You ask:

If you don't mind, can you give me some sources for this information on Vietnam?
[...]
I do have access to some primary documents so Im being sincere when I ask for you to point me in the right direction to read up on this.

It's long past my bed-time – in fact 34 hours online so far, but when I saw your question I decided to do a bit more research on the US Marines 'Dowsing School' that was set up, according to the information I had, to prepare them for detecting Vietcong booby traps, guerrilla fighters hiding in tunnels and behind false walls and the like.

I had taken my information from two very reliable sources, top dowsing teachers highly regarded worldwide.  I decided to find out more.  And so I contacted the British Society of Dowsers who refer you to the definitive history of dowsing, written by Christopher Bird.  The whole of Chapter 11 (which starts on page 199) of his book, "The Divining Hand" (published by Whitford, USA, 1993) gives full details about those events.  This book should be available, I am told by the Society, at most public libraries because it is an acknowledged classic work.

Dennis Wheatley, one of my sources, is president of a dowsing society and a professional dowsing tutor.  He lectures and writes regularly on dowsing related subjects and has made three films on dowsing for National TV Networks – so I knew he was reliable.  I quote from him, where he speaks of the Christopher Bird book, "The Divining Hand", and he says of it: "This book by an American dowser is a comprehensive survey of the history of dowsing and will, no doubt, in future years be regarded as a scholarly and classic work.  I doubt that it will ever be equalled or bettered.  I accidentally stumbled across the book in a public library.  It impressed me so much that I taught myself to dowse.  In so doing, it changed my entire career."

That book was actually one of a large list of titles that I am going to include at the end of the course – so you've got it now as 'Fate' would have it.

I was talking to Malvina (*Walking The Path*) on MSN Messenger and telling her about your Vietnam question... and she did a brilliant bit of research and dug up lots of sites with details about this....

So, here are some of the things that she found on:

Here's a snippet from a Dowsing Society's information website:
<" Throughout history we find many examples of its use. For example: there are records from ancient Egypt showing people using pendulums and in the 15th and 16th centuries German dowsers were used successfully in England to locate minerals deep under ground. During the Vietnam war U.S. Marines were trained with considerable success to detect Viet Cong tunnels which until then had been difficult to find using modern methods. Today dowsing is recognised and used by many scientists and doctors in all parts of the world. Dowsing can enlarge your world and your consciousness of it, in any direction you choose by tapping into the mysterious, hidden energies in and around us.">

And this one, from another website, describes the US Dowsing  Marines:
<"In the USA, Louis J Matacia is a surveyor who has studied dowsing for years. During the Vietnam War he was commissioned to teach dowsing skills to US Marines so that they could avoid booby traps, navigate safely through jungles and learn the whereabouts of the enemy. Soldiers reported that using the L-rod in this way saved many lives.">

The above is a snippet from
"A SHORT HISTORY OF DEEP DOWSING"
a brief but interesting summary which is worth reading and can be found at:
http://www.americaninsurancedepot.com/help/dowsing.htm

Also from the above site, incidentally, is another snippet (this time regarding Einstein, whom I mentioned in section 1):
<" Albert Einstein, performed impressive feats with a variety of dowsing devices. Most of these feats were only of academic value but by the middle of the 20th century dowsing was regularly being put to a great variety of profitable uses.">

Another 'history of dowsing' page that the reader will find very interesting is the BBC's "The History of Dowsing.2" fact-page, where again details of the US Marine's involvement with Dowsing is documented – along with many other fascinating historic facts of Dowsing success.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/alabaster/A881624

Finally, you ask – regarding the training of the Marines for Dowsing:
quote:
"How did they determine who was a positive thinking marine?  I have to say it is consistent with your teachings it wont move or give accurate information if you doubt it or are not "positive thinking">

The book I mentioned will no doubt tell you every detail in it's full chapter description of the events, but this little snippet that *WalkingThePath* found when I mentioned what you'd said about this may give some indication of the way it is, and has to be:
(again taken from a website)
Dowsing requires faith, respect, and a personal interaction/response with the rod. Raymond Willey observes that "you must be prepared to treat this faculty of dowsing with respect." (Willey, Modern Dowsing, 6. ) Further: "Anything that causes the dowser to question the act, or to lose 'faith' in it, immediately renders him incapable of performing. He can get no answers from his device, or method.

There is plenty of information out there, and the above are just a small example.

The dowsing thing in vietnam is true. I've seen documentaries that mention it on the History Chanel. Plus I have a good friend who did 4 tours in Vietnam in the late 60s and he confirmed it. They used it to find tunnels in the jungle.

Quick point: If you regard the pendulum as a conscious entity you will make it become one (conscious to some degree, but with an individuality of its own - at least in the same way as we are seperate from our higher selves).
But it doesnt have to be that way.

MAYATNIK

Hello Everyone,

I would like to start this post by thanking James S for his input regarding newcomers to the Pendulum, and his concerns.  As can be seen from later sections of this course, I have spelled out yet again what I have consistently stated since introducing the Pendulum to this site, and in fact always stressed, about the need for the student of the Pendulum (and also Dowsing in general) to take it one step at a time, in other words walk before you can run.  The over-eagerness of many to have a guide can be counter productive.  A guide will only be assigned to a person if the student is considered ready (and this applies to anyone, whether using the Pendulum, Dowsing in general, or any other 'path' they are taking).  What can arise, if the person is over-eager is a kind of hysteria (in psychology terms) where almost the first question they ask (and hope for a favourable answer to) is "Am a talking to my guide here?".  Some may, indeed, have a guide already before coming to the Pendulum.  But, unless they clearly can be sure of this from prior experiences and interaction with that guide, it is best to assume – as will invariably be the case with the beginner – that they do not have a guide, and certainly not in the sense that label, 'guide', is popularly and erroneously  assumed.  James has endeavoured to point this out several times himself in his posts to this topic in general.  And, from several out of the quite numerous members who are now in contact with me on Messenger or by email, I find the need to explain to those admittedly few in error on this point, that they should first and foremost regard the Pendulum (and now the L-rod) as being a tool for their inner-development before they can proceed to thinking in terms of being 'guided' by it as such.  For a person to just blandly say in an all-encompassing manner "I am guided by my Pendulum" quite rightly sets alarm bells ringing in the minds of those who hear this, fearing that the person who has made that statement is being led by 'blind faith' to think and do what their Pendulum is telling them and that furthermore it could lead (the onlooker may well assume) to the person becoming reliant on their 'tool' for every decision.  The Pendulum does not actually allow this to occur, but the onlooker not realising this is naturally alarmed.

James S has pointed out on several occasions now, the need for the divinator using their tool to check from many angles – a very useful 'tactic' being to go back to previous answers given, and double-check these indirectly such that if a 'yes' had been given, to assume a stance of "what if..." 'No' had been the case, and investigating to see what can be gleaned with that assumption in view; this is a technique used in police investigation work, and by computer programmers - I, like James, am a computer programmer, and we call this 'recursive' questioning.  I, myself, adopted that approach right from the start when I was first learning to use the Pendulum.  Although I proceeded always with a very positive attitude, I did not accept blindly the answers given to me by the Pendulum.  In fact, as my 'investigations' using it proceeded I successively encountered more and more 'scenarios' that I was being asked to consider, in a landscape that was being painted by answers given to me.  So, I investigated everything with a 'why?' attitude.  Why was I being presented these 'facts'?  Why was I being given these 'experiences' to conjure in my mind?... And 'what' was I to do in those 'situations' that I found myself virtually enacting as I came to be in contact with sentient beings, as clearly become more evident (even if sometimes these were actually 'characters' that were being 'put into the scene' for me to interact with, these beings involving me by that means with 'role playing').  I became aware (and this was even more the case as I developed instant telepathy after those first few days of my hours-long sessions with the Pendulum) that I was often being 'tested' in some way; this proved to be tests of the parameters of my then present perception, and for my inner-development.  I consciously decided to 'go with  it' as I was obviously being taught something, and thus played-out virtual 'situations' that stretched my perception and dissolved what prior-conditioned still remained (very little, actually, because I opted from the outset to approach this with a completely open and receptive mind), at that time way back in 1995/6, my early telepathic years.

Just to give an example of this 'role-playing', I was on one particular occasion 'taken' (my complete awareness that is, my still conscious body remaining behind) to a large complex that I understood at that time to be the 'head office' of the beings, and my purpose there was to see someone to discuss the results of a previous 'experience' they had given me in their realm where I'd been asked to evaluate a situation I had found there at that time.  So it was, that I found myself in an anti-room alone waiting to see this Being, the head of a select committee.  I looked around me, the walls were cream, the carpet a dark maroon in contrast to the scarlet carpet of the corridor outside.  There was a large elongated-oval table of very dark wood (the doors in the corridor were of this same very dark brown) with many chairs placed around it for meetings.  The room seemed otherwise quite empty of furnishings but I didn't get chance to look further because, at that moment, a door (set into the typical archway that was part of the architecture I had seen on previous 'visits') on the left wall at the far end of the room openened, and a 'man' of what we would consider 60-ish in age by to his countenance, entered dressed in robes that were reminiscent of a Roman toga somewhat but of thick silk-like material in a soft white.  I knew intuitively that this was not the being I had been sent to see.  And he confirmed this, introducing himself as that high-being's secretary.

"He can't see you at the moment.  So, while we are waiting to go in to him, I'd like to ask you a few things about yourself – like, how you came to be invited to see him in the first place, because it is very unusual for humans to be so invited" he said with a 'between our two selves' manner and a lets-be-friends smile.

I was immediately suspicious of his manner.  If this was a 'test' as I suspected, then I wasn't going to let him know that, since that might bring to an end this encounter, and I wanted to be able to 'sus out' more first.  So, instead, I decided to play it 'in role', according to how the situation had been presented to me previously by that higher-being, whom I had been sent on this particular occasion to meet with at the 'office', andwho had said that on my return (after my 'death') I would be engaged in departmental work looking at issues that had been within my experience during that lifetime, and that I would be attending meetings in that building – in fact, sitting on such committees as that table seemed prepared in readiness for.  I did not look upon this from any 'ego' point of view, but rather as a humble matter-of-fact "if that's what I have to do, then I will do it to the best of my ability" attitude.  With that in mind, I laid into the situation I found myself in.

"What is your name?" I asked, politely but coldly, showing no sign of wishing to be his 'friend' as he seemed to want the relationship to be.  "I am not permitted to reveal that.  All I can say is that I am in the service of the committee as a member of that committee" he said, and added as if to clinch the matter, "It was we who voted that you should serve on our committee on your return, and that is a great honour".  I was not impressed.

I maintained my distance from him of about six feet or so, and addressed him in a cool and withering tone of voice (telepathically actually, but the feeling was conveyed clearly to him).  "Since you say I will be with you at some time in the future, and that you are on that committee I shall apparently be involved with I have to tell you this, quite bluntly but with great respect, so that you may be in no doubt where we stand you and I.  I don't need your name, because I shall know you, and I shall certainly remember this occasion.  And, you may be assured on this – that if I come to be involved with your committee I should not expect any committee member to ask for confidential information such as you have just done without the ratification of the committee, since this would not be befitting of that status.  Therefore, I decline at this stage to enter into any such dialogue, and our conversation on that topic should now be considered to be at an end.  Do I make myself clear?"

"Perfectly clear," the being said.  "Your purpose here in this interview has been fulfilled.  You will now be returned and be contacted in due course.  Peace."  And he gave the Pleiadian equivalent of a formal shaking of hands, by placing his right arm at an angle across his chest, over the heart area.  I did the same.  Then I was returned to the 'normality' of my living room.

For just a few moments I reflected on what I had just done, on the enormity of confronting a being of obviously high status, and effectively telling him that he should know better than act in the manner he had done. "Phew!" I thought, but I had done what I felt was right in the situation.  Within seconds my guide came to me, "You did very well there!" she said.  "That was a test, to see how you would react and play that out.  How you were there was what we expected, and the being you saw was not in any way 'offended'; he was asked to play that 'role', and you can be assured he would never, other than for such a test, act in breach of any responsibility given to him in the importance of his office in which he holds very high status.  You passed the test".

There were many such 'tests', all different in nature and presentation, and it was never obvious that they were tests – at any time it could be (and often was) the 'real thing'.  In that way my inner-development, along with increasingly higher perspective, continued as I progressed.  On a simpler leve, but no less meaningful are the 'tests' that a person can from time to time be given via the Pendulum (or L-rod) in Question-Answer sessions.  All the while, the perception of the person is being gradually broadened and inner-vision made more clear to explore avenues beyond the confines of that which is 'normal' to the human in their 3-D existence.  The situations will be different for each person, some having more than others according to what is required by the guides.

When I refer to 'the guides', I mean this in the sense of how one can view the Administrators of a College, because those beings set the Agenda and corriculum for each individual who is in prospect of eventually getting a guide of their own.  So, in those early stages the person will be 'watched' closely, unseen at first as the person uses the Pendulum which is in every way capable of answering the person from the 'computer' that the Pendulum connects to in the Higher Realms, what is termed generally the 'source' and this connection is via the Higher Self (the link being between that Higher Self accessing those realms and the body-conscious through the Pineal and Adrenal glands).

It has to be clearly understood, that if and when a 'permanent' guide is assigned to a person then it is for the purpose of helping others (not for making life easier for that person, so the person does not have particular 'advantages' over others.  As a person, each must live their life, to experience all that is set out for them in that lifetime – and this they must themselves work through.  Even when a permanent guide is assigned, there will be occasions when that guide may step back for additional teacher-gudes to assist the person in higher-learning for a future task in view by the guides.  At first though, the position is that a person does not have an 'individual' guide assigned to them on a regular basis.  In fact, any guide in those early stages must be assumed to be from a pool of guides who are 'on duty' in a shift-system.  So, whichever guide happens to be on duty that day will 'monitor' the situation regarding that person, as well as monitoring others at the same time (they do this by multi-tasking, which some members as they have gained telepathy have already found, and their 'guides' have explained this to them).  The long-established notion of the 'Guardian Angel' should be seen in that context also – simply that each person on this Earth is watched, or 'monitored'.  But, a monitor-guide, in the sense we are speaking of here in higher spiritual development, is a specially trained guide who can call upon teacher-guides to be assigned to a person for a specific period.  Even this assignment of a teacher-guide will sometimes need the ratification of a teacher-supervisor guide, if there are a complex range of situations that the person will encounter in the future, and for which forward-planning is done.  I had occasion very recently to be contacted by one such teacher-supervisor who had come to one of the members, and that member had been told by that guide to ask me (as confirmation) of who that guide was and what their purpose was at that time.  I explained to the member, and they said that this guide had indeed told them the very same thing (although the guide had asked them not to say anything until I had answered them) – so it was absolute confirmation that the guide in question was genuine, since I could not have known this other than by me actually talking, myself, via telepathy, with that guide to ascertain this on behalf of the person.

Part of my job assigned to me, is to teach telepathy when a guide considers it is time for the person.  I work at the moment on MSN Messenger to do this, and the 'lesson' involves me talking with the person and, as the tuition proceeds for them to talk to their guide (the voice in their head) and (very importantly, for the purpose of the lesson) to type exactly what the guide says.  This they then do, typing each response by the guide and using quotes for what the guide says, followed by the initial letter of the guide's name, so that I will know.  Thus, we have effectively a 3-way conversation on Messenger – me, the person, and the person's guide.  I, of course, am in direct contact with that person's guide on a 'private line', and their guide will tell me, as the lesson proceeds, what they want me to move onto or prompt the person about.  Thus there is obtained a very effective and quick means of confidence building and clarity of reception during the lesson (which can take several hours).  These lessons can, depending on the person's needs according to what the guide wants at that time, involve 'visual' telepathy-elements also (very often, these will be incorporated to facilitate rapid acquisition of telepathy) – or these can be covered in a separate lesson period.

It has to be stressed that, when I give tuition for telepathic training, it is not when I choose to do it, nor indeed any choice or determination of such need on my part.  It can only be done when a guide decided it is time for that person.  So, it is no use a person saying to me, "Can you teach me telepathy now please. I feel I am ready".  I can not agree to do that of my own accord, so the first thing I do on such a request from a member is to contact that person's guide (if indeed they have one, or my guide) to find out whether this person is ready, and what will be required if so.  I then tell the person what the situation is.  If it is 'No, not ready' (and I am given full details as well in the answer I receiver) then I cannot proceed to give telepathy tuition – and all such tuition  is at all times done by me working extremely closely with both my guide and their guide (so, for me there are three conversations often going on at the same time as I work).

I address this issue here because it highlights James' concern, and I wish to clarify that situation to leave no doubt in people's minds.  I have successfully and easily brought several members to the stage of them now having full and clear instant telepathy with their respective guides, but two members quite recently and up to this present time are earnestly seeking to have telepathy with their guides, as they have explained to me.  Their desire for speedy spiritual growth is commendable.  But, they are not quite ready for telepathy at the present moment, and I have been told this.  So, for them there may be a couple of weeks at the very least until they may be considered ready by the guides.  Much of what causes a person not to 'be ready' (apart from issues of inner-development) is very often simply an over-eagerness.  Wanting will not make it so.  In fact, a calm disposition is essential before telepathy can come about.  Hyper-activity will result in unstable progress, and is counter-productive.  So, what I say in such instances specifically – and as a guideline in general to all – is be calm in your disposition, live each day for what it brings, and trust that you will be guided unseen to all opportunities for growth, and in that way all will be possible.  Over-trying makes the waiting longer, but by being relaxed and accepting of what is given in that moment for that present time then all that is hoped for and much more will suddenly arrive in the twinkling of an eye virtually when the time is right, so all that is required is patience and love in your heart.  Most of all, be at peace with yourself.

So, to return to the context of this present course on Dowsing, the aim is to provide a firm 'foundation', to get to know your 'tools' (L-rod and Pendulum) and how they can work in practical ways that will reinforce your growing confidence and trust in what they can do when using them.

Regarding the point raised by James concerning the Pendulum having a "mind of its own" (as Dowsers often say).  That phrase, of course, is not literal in its meaning.  Rather, it is a wry comment on the seeming obstinacy of the device to comply with expectations, as sometimes exhibited.  I don't know how it is in other countries, but here in England we use that phrase often when trying to do something with an object - maybe fit some fiddly part, like a spring - that refuses to do what we want, and locates itself otherwise to our frustration.  So, of course, the Pendulum itself does not have a 'mind' – it is simply a tool.  It is actually a 'transducer', simply being used to physically manifest (in our 3-D world) communication in the form of movements that we can understand as 'yes' or 'no' responses that come in from outside of our self and are relayed to the Pendulum through the nerves and muscles of the body at a subconscious level.  there is a 'mind', a conscious 'source' behind it all - whether this be the 'computer' in the Higher Realms that I refer to, or a guide of whatever status relaying through the 'computer' (which is a living-entity in itself and part of the Collective Consciousness as far as is within our ability to grasp that concept). So, obviously there may be times when that 'mind' responds in ways that we may find, until we understand, inexplicable but which is ultimately for our benefit and for a Higher Purpose than what the mortal human 'wants'.  Hence, the wry expression when the human realises that he does not have control of all he wishes!

Inguma, yet another Moderator and a man of considerable experience in his own fields of interest, also commented on the Pendulum, regarding that phrase – having a "mind of its own", where he states:
quote:
Quick point: If you regard the pendulum as a conscious entity you will make it become one (conscious to some degree, but with an individuality of its own - at least in the same way as we are seperate from our higher selves).
But it doesn't have to be that way.

People get an 'affinity' with their Pendulum.  In this way they begin to see a 'personality' in the 'yes'/'no' replies, and they will often describe a 'yes' reply as a *smiling* or *cheerful* response, and conversely a 'no' response can be seen, as the person develops that greater 'rapport' which conveys more than just a stark reply, to contain within it the component of personality that seems to be saying not just 'no' but "No!  That is certainly NOT the case here with regard to your question!" – and at other times, people have commented that their Pendulum has projected a sense of humour, seemingly laughing as it gives a response the Pendulum user then understands as "No!  You don't seriously think that would be the case, do you?" and some have said that they've actually heard a *laugh* in their head.  So, this affinity building is a good thing, that bonding with the Pendulum as an extension of their complete 'reception', at almost a telepathic level – and that is indeed why the Pendulum used in long Question/Answer sessions that delve deep into issues leads quickly to such a 'rapport' and the beginnings of telepathy itself quite naturally.  (Strengthening that 'psychic muscle', that link, is where I come in with telepathic tuition when the time is considered right – which is not simply because the person is starting to perceive more than just the 'yes' or 'no').

When I gave the analogy of the Voltmeter that can produce seemingly 'incorrect' readings from time to time, I was not referring to need for calibration.  In fact, any well trained technician can test the calibration at any time (even adjust it if they have the right training approach) and a considerable number of aids to this are available, such as the resistance/capacitance 'bridge' or a high-precision combination of voltage source and 'test resistance'.  In talking about the Pendulum, it is assumed that the 'source' can not 'go wrong' inadvertently, so must be assumed reliable in delivering responses, whether these be considered accurate or inaccurate. Much depends, not on the Pendulum but on the person themselves.  Similarly, a  perfectly calibrated Voltmeter can produce wildly inaccurate readings if what is being tested is not properly understood.  So, simply applying a test across a resistor for voltage, or in series with it for current does not, of itself, always give a meaningful answer – since much depends on the 'resistance' in circuit (and I mean this as a direct analogy to the human being as part of the 'circuit chain' in all of this... and that also includes whether they are adequately 'well grounded' in their perceptions, because common sense rather than 'floating on clouds' is an important factor in true spiritual growth.

It has to be realized, that at no time is there a 'being within the Pendulum' itself, and the device only transduces exactly the same as the speakers of your hi-fi system or your headphones act as transducers for the voltage signal at the output of the amplifier.  If an electronics engineer was to depict the hi-fi and headphones setup (effectively a voltage circuit) in diagram form, then he would represent it in the following way:

S ----------o-$$$$$$$$$-o >---##########-----o
signal -----> amplifier --> ------- headphones --- ground
SOURCE

Everything in electronics can be reduced to this basic diagram form (where '$$$' represents one 'resistance' and '###' represents a second resistance) and that defines it completely.  The varying voltage 'signal' (communication from the SOURCE (which in Hi-fi terms may be a tape etc) is present across both elements of the diagram (the two 'impendances' – which is the term given to dynamic, or changing, resistance in transmitting information this way).

The Pendulum, as part of the 'communication link' can be diagramatically represented in exactly the same way:

S -------o-$$body$$-o >---##Pendulum##-----o
SOURCE --> perceptor --> -- transducer –- ground

In the above diagram the <perceptor> (person, in other words) is not consciously aware, in only starting out, of the input... and just passes it through to the Pendulum which responds to subconsciously generated varying nerve-muscle 'modulations' (signal, in other words).  'Perception' is very important, and goes hand-in-hand with the psychic element of a person.  As perception increases, then so does the person's awareness of the signal.  But, initially, the person presents an 'impedance' (lack of higher perception) to the telepathic input (from the 'Source', S).  This is equivalent to the two-resistor diagram in physics.  A resistance is essentially a conglomerate of impurities that impede the signal flow.  With lower resistance there is higher 'current' (more efficient, stronger flow).  As the person works on their inner-development the conditioning ('impurities' that impede full awareness and higher perception) is disolved and greater receptivity is the result.  So it is, that at first it is only  the extremely sensitive Pendulum that can transduce the most minute subconsciously perceived telepathic input – but then the person, by constant diligence in long periods of practice with it, starts to build what will become a very strong conductance that the person themselves – without the aid of the Pendulum – can translate into meaningfully perceived input.  The telepathic 'symbols', previously only understood at a subconscious level, are then made perceptible to the consciousness – and that input may be made manifest in a number of ways, according to the training of the person by the guide, such that they can then receive what translates to 'words' (with a voice of its own character and feelings transmitted) and the reception of 'pictures' (even the facility of being able to 'visit' by actual conscious-connection other places in time and space, as well as other realms outside of time.  That, in a nutshell, is how it works.

James S

Myatnik,

That was an excellent and well detailed analogy regarding the "communication" workings of the pendulum (so speaketh me with my background in electronics[:)])

None the less, you have cleared this aspect up very well, and also put to rest a few other concerns I have seen and indeed had myself.

With many thanks,
James.

S.1 == DOWSING DIVINATION ==
–- ('Traditional' and 'Advanced')

== PART ONE ==

My first thought, when my original thread <AND THE TRUTH SHALL BE KNOWN – You'll see!> became increasingly more difficult for members to firstly read right through and then later find points they wanted to refresh on, was simple... a SUMMARY, a FAQ section and a few additions.  But, life is never that simple – it should be, but it isn't.

In the last couple of weeks (at the time of writing) there has grown among several members a significant degree of confusion as to what the Pendulum is all about – and this has now reached such an extent that a couple of members had decided to devise questions and a method to 'test' the validity of the Pendulum to give correct answers.  No matter how good the intent, that approach will not work...because  (as any Dowser will tell you, and there are a vast number worldwide  in virtually every country), the Pendulum has a mind of its own.  So, by testing its 'validity' it can only be a test of whether it is worth using or not.  And, since the Pendulum has never shown a will to be 'tested', in the many hundreds of years that it's use has been documented, it has invariably given wrong (or 'trick') answers when such an attitude is adopted.  The end result therefore, for those who would approach it in that fashion, can only lead to it being useless as a tool for Advanced Divination or even Traditional Dowsing. to those particular users, and anyone else who is led to doubt its ability to provide meaningful and productive responses – so this modified  course is designed to rectify that problem, make everyone happy, and provide a lot of new interest along the way because I shall now present the best methods of using the Pendulum from a different angle (along with introducing an equivalent dowsing tool, the L-rod)  by incorporating Traditional methods as a solid foundation, but retaining the Advanced method where appropriate.

The 'Advanced' method I presented is much quicker to learn for the purpose intended in my first course on this forum, for inner-development and leading to the gaining of telepathic ability for those who then became receptive, since this is achieved in a natural and easy way when the person is ready -  and that is why it was given to me by my guide to present here at the Astral Pulse.  It had worked with 100% success and rapid development of skill, teaching it on a one-to-one basis and even in groups face to face.  But, here on the Internet was always going to be an experiment as to how many would actually follow the course, because it was a first time in this format of teaching.  Had it been published in a book, then it would have been no problem, since the reader, as an individual working alone, would have been able to take it in and absorb what it meant for them.  But here we have found conflicting 'views', since each person is different naturally – nothing wrong with that, and it was hoped that in the sharing of each person's experiences ideas would flow - except that when there is a measure of doubt instilled in the minds of those who are otherwise making good progress it has become a case of one step forward and two steps back at those times (as quite a number have reported when contacting me direct) and this necessitated much more work on my part (and later Parmenion, working with me also – along with Karek) burning the midnight oil to get things back on track.

But, it was my guide's intention that the method should be presented FREE to all, rather than being restricted to those who could purchase a book or attend some class – so, it is still our intention to teach the Advanced method albeit in a slightly modified way to incorporate now some elements of Traditional Dowsing within that framework.  As members will see, as we progress through this course, there will be ample scope in Traditional Dowsing pursuits to 'test' with the Pendulum, and this will satisfy all those who have doubted its validity due to 'wrong answers' being obtained.  You may have noticed, but I shall repeat it... I used the phrase Test WITH the Pendulum, and not 'Test the Pendulum' – and in that is the key to the way forward.

I am sure that members will find the projects I  have carefully selected to include in this course of interest, even exciting, because they explore many, many things in a scientific way but by a means that science can not understand with its limited technology at this stage in Man's evolution.  The Pendulum is indeed a very powerful tool – in fact, in the right hands, a truly precision instrument.  In this way it can be regarded like a voltmeter as a rough analogy, because a voltmeter is a precision instrument but can give very misleading results if not understood properly. (I will not go into details about the voltmeter, but I can assure you – as electronics was my field – that it has to be used correctly to give a precise reading).  Certainly, it would be a poor electrician, or even technician, who took the voltmeter or any intstrument apart to test its validity, since that would be the same as re-inventing the wheel – and the same applies to the Pendulum, which has been successfully in use for hundreds of years and has always given reliable results when used properly, often leading to new scientific discoveries both as a result of 'information dowsing' (divination) and through Traditional Dowsing (investigating such as ley-lines and earth energies, as well as water /oil /mineral dowsing).  We shall look at many of those things, and others besides, as we proceed through the course, and give methods as appropriate.

To keep it as easy (and quick) as possible without sacrificing any of the essential features of Dowsing Principles, I have careful chosen those points that will not be confusing to the newcomer, especially since we shall be incorporating 'Advanced' mode with the Traditional 'Default' mode.  And, at the end of the course, a list of many books will be provided for further reading for those who want to delve deeper and maybe take up the Art/Science of Dowsing Divination.  That list will not be provided until the end because experts differ slightly in their methods, and there is  no 'absolute' standard for 'yes'/ 'no' movements (the reason for this is fully explained in section two) and that would cause problems at this stage, though the reader will have no such problem or confusion when encountering other texts later once the basics have been grasped with the Advanced mode movements which work as well and usually much better in any application of Dowsing, as well as understanding and being able to use the Traditional Dowsing techniques.

Despite the fact that there are Dowsing Societies with large memberships in virtually every country in the world now, some people still haven't heard about dowsing.  In the UK, the British Society of Dowsers was founded in 1933 by Colonel AH Bell, and the American Society of Dowsers Inc is the largest in the world with 75 affiliated 'Dowsing Chapters' throughout the USA with additional smaller groups in many areas too.  I will be supplying a list of many of the Societies Worldwide, and items such as Pendulums and L-rods  can be purchased from those and many local groups.  Dowsing groups tend to form near sites of antiquity and within reach of ley-lines which are of great interest for exploratory dowsing – and of course there are ley-lines on every continent, as well as many Sacred Sites where 'earth energies'  will be found.   I shall be discussing how you can detect these energies yourself with the Pendulum and L-rod tools, check them against the findings of others  (and many scientific and careful studies have been done over a long period of time, so there is much that is fascinating and rewarding to learn as you proceed with these tools), and who knows – you may even in time, if you become a serious Dowser, discover new things to add to the already extensive knowledge that has been gained by these  investigation devices which have already opened the door to new frontiers of discovery over the centuries.

History records that some of the most famous people were dowsers, and these include such as –
Leonardo Da Vinci,
Robert Boyle (the founder of the Royal Society),
Sir Isaac Newton,
Johan Ritter (the founding father of electrochemistry),
Thomas Edison,
Edgar Cayce,
Albert Einstein.

I quote from one source:
<<"In 1897, Sir JJ Thomson made one of the greatest scientific discoveries when he isolated the electron  The control of the electron has transformed the 20th century with dazzling technologies from computers to television receivers.  For this, Thomson was knighted and given the Nobel Prize.  During a presentation to a group of eminent scientists he requested that science should turn it's attention to the physics of dowsing – but this plea fell on deaf ears.   To JJ Thomson, dowsing was for real!">>

Although mainstream science still tends to ignore Dowsing (yet has 'opinions' on it – not a very scientific thing, to have 'opinions', it should at least research it first!) but some scientists do use the Pendulum in their work nevertheless, as did some of the more 'forward thinking' scientists through the centuries.  Many Dowsing Societies have their own Scientific Advisors, and significant studies have been done with EEG analysis of expert Dowsers who have  been found to exhibit Alpha, Beta and Theta brainwave patterns while Dowsing.

A report on Brain Wave activity in the 1980s by an American, Dr Edith Jurka, MD, who recorded the brain wave activities of Dowsers using a 'mind mirror' developed by Dr C Maxwell-Cade  based on Electroencephalographs (EEG) states that remarkable correlations were found.  "When in the Dowsing mode, the beat wave beta frequency of the thinking state lowers in frequency to the Alpha state which is a meditative state.  When a dowsing target is found there is a burst of the lower frequency state of around 4 to 7 cycles per second, which corresponds to brain wave activity in dreaming sleep".

In 1996, a team headed by Edward Stillman, the scientific advisor to the American Dowsing Society, did a similar investigation of Dowsers, using modern computer controlled EEG equipment which can generate coloured pictures.  This research confirmed Dr Jurka's findings and broke new ground on this subject.  Edward Stillman, commenting on the latest research, said: "Dowsing appears to be a truly unique and creative human altered state of consciousness".

In layman's terms, the following is a very brief outline, regarding the alpha, beta and theta states as they apply to Dowsing ("D"), correlated with Transcendental ("T") Meditation and Zen ("Z") Meditation:

Present in.....
"T"-Meditation ---  Alpha and Theta waves
"Z"-Meditation ---  Beta, Alpha and Theta waves
"D"– Activities ---  Beta, Alpha and Theta waves <--(DOWSING)

For reference:
('cycles per second' = Hertz (Hz)

BETA ----- above 14 Hz --- Conscious 'waking' state, processing information.
ALPHA --- 8 to 13 Hz ------ Reflective, Contemplative, Restful – THE DOWSING 'MENTAL STATE'
THETA --- 4 to 7 Hz -------- Dreaming sleep
DELTA --- 0.5 to 3 Hz ------ Deep, dreamless sleep

The achieving of all three states (Alpha, Beta and Theta) in the use of this tool by a person, indicates that the person becomes naturally reflective, contemplative and restful as they go about their Dowsing, and this is the key to their receptivity (even telepathy for those who become advanced in their constant use of the Pendulum).  Even more remarkable is the fact that Dowsing has been dated back to at least 6,000 BC, which indicates that those ancient civilizations, and even earlier Man, were able to achieve those states.  Sig Lonegren, the America 'Spiritual' Dowser, reported on Neolithic 'Cave Art' and carvings of Dowsing tools in Tassili, Algeria – a site known as the "Library of Dowsing Tools" – and depicted there is a character holding a dowsing tool watched by onlookers with obvious interest, seemingly giving a dowsing lesson to them.

Dowsers are also depicted on ancient Egyptian bas-reliefs – and Cleopatra employed Dowsers to find gold.  Dowsers were a part of the ancient Stonemasons craft, and the Pyramids were built to very great precision using the Pendulum (the true ancestor of the now humble builder's plumb-line – which did far more than hang straight when in the hands of those ancient buildiers, since they used it to ask questions regarding the construction by Sacred Geometry, as well as for orientation and extremely accurate measurement, all with that one 'tool'!).

China too had its Dowsers, and a depiction of them appears on the statue of the Chines Emperor, Kwang Su, who reigned around 2,200 BC.  Agricola's book De Re Metallica (1550) includes an illustration of Dowsers prospecting for minerals.  A great deal of Dowsing information and methods comes from France where, in the Middle Ages Bishops, Abbots of Monasteries, and priests resisted the Church's denunciation of Dowsing (which the Church said was the "work of the Devil") – and those clerics who preserved the documentation clearly thought otherwise, so we must be thankful to them because much could have been lost otherwise.  More recently, the American General Patton employed Dowsers to locate underground water supplies in arid regions.

The L-Rod will be discussed later in some applications, since it has versatility in 'information dowsing'  (or 'spiritual' divination) and direction-pointing in the  finding of objects and following tracks, though the Pendulum is also able to do all these things and is the better choice for unobtrusiveness, ease of use, as well as  handy to slip into the pocket – and of course, the Pendulum is the best tool for Map Dowsing (this will also be discussed later, with methods given)

Uri Geller, although made famous for his ability to bend spoons, plus stop and start watches and clocks, is an expert 'information dowser'  – and he is one of the best exponents of Map Dowsing for all types of minerals, oil, and gas.  Many large industrial corporations have employed Uri Geller for this.  Unlike the many 'tunnel-visioned' scientists who either ignore dowsing or do not believe in its scope, the industrial corporations have no 'hang ups' about dowsing., as they get results.  In fact, top dowsers working in all fields in the industrial sector are paid many thousands of dollars an hour for their services in locating mineral, oil, gas, and water – and most often the dowser earns his/her money simply by looking at a map and asking the Pendulum questions; typically the whole 'job' can often be done in 30 minutes or so actually, compared with the months it would take engineers working on sites on land or sea (even if they were able to find the sites in the first place) and thus the thousands paid to the dowser saves the industrial giants many more thousands that otherwise would have had to have been paid out to teams, as well as saving enormous amounts of time.  But, such 'expertise' is not the province of the ordinary dowser – those expert dowsers know a bit more than the average dowser, and have a 'communication' link that is telepathic (as does Uri Geller), so much practice is needed and definitely a positive and receptive approach is essential from the start.  And, most importantly, the Dowser cannot work if he has 'ego' or 'nit picks' about the answers, although it must be understood that the Information Dowser does not take an answer as 'gospel' but only as part of a thorough investigation by many more questions gerally.    Information dowsing (as also in ordinary dowsing) relies on constant re-evaluation of answers received, and much questioning is essential to obtain a clear 'picture', a homing-in on the knowledge.  Doubting, as any dowser will tell you, has a detrimental effect and can even result in the Dowsing tool just refusing to work for the person.  Major-General J Scott-Elliot, a past president of the British Society of Dowsers, mentions in his book, Dowsing – one man's way, that Dowsing works best "when there is a need to know".  Other dowsers readily concur with this.  Dennis Wheatley, President of the UK's Wyvern Dowsing Society and a Professional Dowsing Instructor,  also writes "From my own experience I agree with him.... Party Tricks when there isn't a real 'need to know' tend to go awry, and I never indulge in these.  As I see it, if a Dowser tries such tricks, he or she is engaged in an egotistical exercise".

The Dowsing 'tool', whether it be L-Rod or Pendulum, has its particular uses and methods depending on the field of investigation – but it is always a tool for investigation, and always the accent should be on homing-in on the answer and not blind acceptance of an answer or doubt as to whether the Pendulum is accurate.  In the case of Traditional Dowsing for ley-energies and such, or the finding of roman coins in a field, this will become self-evident in the methods used.  But in the case of Map Dowsing, where one is not even 'on site' (and therefore it cannot even be said that there is a relationship between the Pendulum's response and some factor – however invisible it may be to the eye) the need to 'trust' the Pendulum becomes apparent, and very necessary if results are to be obtained.   In Map Dowsing one simply sits at a table with the Pendulum and applies methods to determine the location of whatever is being sought – even a missing person – and the Pendulum leads the seeker to the appropriate area of the map where what one is seeking will be (and subsequently, on visiting the site, is) found.  Map Dowsing can be a process of navigation-type methods and questions, but Information Dowsing (and also 'Spiritual Divination) are purely question sessions to arrive at an answer or fuller picture of a situation.  Since 'Spiritual Dowsing', in particular, often deals with other realms or at least 'new frontiers' (scientific, philosophical, or whatever) there is often no evident yardstick or readily-tangible 'proof' that can be compared with findings, and scenarios painted, as the questioning unfolds new landscapes for investigation; so, it is vital to explore as fully as you can and follow as many trains of question/thought as possible, down all the alleyways if necessary, until you arrive at a 'picture' that makes sense to you.  This includes recursive and oblique questioning techniques, jumping back to an answer given some time back and re-exploring it from an different angle, and other varied questioning methods – so it is a skill which has to be acquired, and the only way to do that is by as much practice as possible.  As many a Dowser has said, "It should be a way of life, rather than just an interesting hobby if one wants to become really adept" – so, 'intuitive' thinking is the key, clear questioning is the approach, and positive attitude is essential.

In the last fifty years, Dowsing has become incorporated into many organisations, businesses and 'interest groups' – even taught by some Education Authorities - who employ Dowsing professionals and  instructors.  Dowsing has been embraced by UNESCO, the Canadian Ministry of Agriculture, the Russian and also Czech armies, and major corporations worldwide.  Cambridge University accepts Water Divining as an approved 'method', and Russian Universities offer a Master's Degree in all types of Dowsing Divination as well as their psychologists and psychiatrists employing Dowsing tools in their research and diagnostic work.  In Russia in particular (although it has been expressed by Dowsing operators worldwide) it is quoted that  they are "astounded that Dowsing is not highly regarded in the Western World".  In recent years, however, thousands of doctors in the western world now complement their work by diagnostic dowsing,  but Alternative Medicine practitioners have been doing this for many years now alongside their Homeopathy, Reflexology and similar treatments.  I, personally, use the Pendulum alongside Reflexology, Reiki and other therapies, in diagnostic analysis of food allergies etc and likewise of auras and chakras, all extremely effectively.

So, with those words to bear in mind, and the example of those other people named in this brief background of Dowsing History, we now move on to seeing what can be done and how to do it as we explore the many fascinating avenues of discovery that Dowsing opens up.

THE FOLLOWING SECTIONS IN THIS SERIES SHOULD BE READ THROUGH IN SEQUENCE TO GAIN A FULL PICTURE, AND THEN INDIVIDUAL SECTIONS MAY BE STUDIED AND PRACTICED WHERE INSTRUCTIONS ARE GIVEN.
