Hi Tisha!

I´m a real soccer nut!

And thank God, the English Premier League has finally started again! I have Canal +, so I can enjoy english football on Saturday, Sunday and often on Monday. On Saturdays and Sundays the show 2 games mostly, with the option to a watch third one on a "Zap"-channel. Sometimes there´s matches on Wednesdays too. They also show the Italian "league". But i prefer English football.

And by the way, UP THE GUNNERS![;)]

Cheers! /Flummox

up the gunners ??!!! come on spurs !

Hi Tisha (& Flummox!) ...I'm a big football fan. I live in Tottenham, London, about 15mins away from the Spurs ground. Arsenal (or "the gunners" as flummox said) are our arch rivals !!

Flummox is a wee bit biased, cos arsenal have a great swedish player called Freddie Ljunberg....

I'm pretty excited cos Spurs have made some great signings.....we nearly signed a USA international player too !! (bobby convey, DC United)....but his work permit was denied....: (

Anyway...I can't wait to go to a few games this season ! Arsenal will be the team to beat this year....

ps- Flummox, we get canal + over here too...there's a pub around the corner that shows illicit live saturday matches....that's where I'll be watching the North London derby !

OK my days of getting worked up over sports are long gone. I just like this topic and wanted to move it to the top of the heap. [8D]

*sings* We love you Freddie, because you´ve got red hair. We love you Freddie because you´re everywhere(?)[;)]

My dream is to move to England. Watch football, go to the pub. And I think the climat would fit me[8D]. Ah*sighs*... them dreams.

A Tottenham player I really like is Darren Anderton(is he still in Tottenham by the way?). Loved Ginola when he was with Spurs. It will be interresting to follow "The Roman Empire" a.k.a Chelski, formerly known as Chelsea[:)]. If money doesn´t do it... Then what?[;)]

Cheers! /Flummox.

I'm not a soccer fan but if I were to choose a team of my liking it would probably be Team Canada although it couldn't qualify for the last World Cup. Oh well. Even though soccer is considered by many to be the world's most popular sport, it is definitely not the most watched sporting event in North America. North Americans generally go for Major League Baseball, NBA, NFL, and the NHL. I'm a huge fan of the Blue Jays as well as the Yankees.[:)]

Muslim Soccer Fans Told to Watch Their Mouths

Fri September 5, 2003 10:35 AM ET
ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkey's religious leaders urged Muslims on Friday to refrain from using foul language when supporting their teams at soccer stadiums.
Imams nationwide called on the devout instead to use phrases like "Maasallah" ("May Allah preserve you") and "Barek Allah" ("Blessed Allah") to cheer on their favorite clubs, the private NTV television station said.

Turkey's passion for soccer has been marred by outbreaks of violence, and police search fans entering stadiums to seize weapons ranging from pocket change to kebab cleavers.

In August, one man was killed and 50 wounded when supporters clashed during a local derby in the western city of Izmir.

"It's certainly nice for fans and spectators at sporting matches to express their excitement, but it needs to be done in a legitimate way. Applause and praising Allah are suitable," NTV quoted Istanbul's top cleric Bayram Erdogan as saying.

He was speaking ahead of the Friday sermon, which contained the call for moderate language.

In Turkey the weekly sermon is drawn up by the Department of Religious Affairs and delivered at tens of thousands of mosques around the country.

The only reason you don't understand football fans is you don't live in Manchester.  Think of it like this:  if you are very, very, very good in this life, and every night when you go to sleep you chant "bend it like beckham" then in your next life you'll come back as a Man U. goal net.  You'll get in all the games free.[:D][:D][:D]

Ok, I'm not a soccer nut.  In fact, I just don't get it.  I mean, it's a nice game, but people go crazy violent over it like it's the end of the world if a soccer match doesn't go their way.  What's up with that?  Aren't games supposed to be FUN?
