There once was a learned man who went to see a Zen master to gain knowledge of Zen. When he arrived at the temple, the Zen master greeted him and sat down and started telling the man about Zen. The learned man would frequently interrupt with his opinions about this or that, or say things like "Oh yes, we have that too." Finally, the Zen master stopped talking and started to pour a cup of tea for the man. However, he kept pouring until the cup overflowed. The learned man watched, and finally said, "Stop pouring, no more can go into the cup." The Zen master simply replied, "Indeed I see, but if you do not first empty your cup, how can you taste my cup of tea?"
