Hypnagogic pipeline? pulses?

Sounds to me like a classic example of hypnogogic imagery.  If so, this is completely common and a biproduct of watching your body go to sleep by focusing on your mind's eye. [^]

I often see something really similar when laying down and shutting off the internal dialogue. Its almost as if its a super simple visualization that my mind has caught onto and learned. I can see it almost instantly , anywhere when I focus and shut down the mind, even superimposed over my waking perceptions if I try to see it with my eyes open. I use it to focus on when I attempt to go into dreaming aware, and I have noticed that it often speeds up the process of falling asleep conciously. When I use this method hypnagogic imagery commonly starts after one or 2 minutes of focus.
I dont know if there is any other signifigance of said "colors", but I learned the method from Carlos's Castaneda's book, The Eagles Gift. He believed once you found a "dreaming color".. orange-red in particular.. that you had permanently "tapped" into the second attention.

Hope you find this information helpful. Late.

i get that all the time, too! only how can it be hypnagogic (sp) if  i can move? my body is numb, but if i wanted to move i could.

I suppose hypnagogic is the wrong term.  I can get these pulses in a matter of minutes sometimes just from closing my eyes.  It has nothing to do with being immobile or intensly into a meditation.  Just sending out these pulses through some cosmic pipeline to parts unknown.  One time I tried to track them and visualized myself entering the pipeline and flying after one particular pulse just to see where it went to, but I lost my concentration after a minute and was shunted out of the pipeline.  Just remembered that, maybe I'll try it again.  [:D]

Just because you can move does not mean that you can't see hypnagogic imagery.  Usually, when you first lay down and close your eyes, you see after images.

Then, you start to see random scenes and images, usuaully as a result of what you did the previous 8-10 hours.  For example, if you spent a good deal of time playing an online video game, you may see things related to that.

After your mind is quieted, you will start to see other images as you get closer to the border between your imagination and the astral.

In all three cases, you can move your physical body if you wanted to.

whenever i get hypnagogic images i am always so out of it that i never tend to remember them, OR I completely wake up and can't fall back asleep...

is there a way to maintain awareness while in that state so you can be lucid when you finally drift off into a dream?

Practice practice practice!  There really isn't an easy way to go about it.  It's more about learning yourself and how your own mind works.

For me, I try to be passively aware of the images.  Like watching cars speed past me on the freeway.  When you first lay down, the images/colors/shapes come and go really fast, as if you were standing on a highway and watching the cars from a stationary position.  You shouldn't think too much about them.  Just notice them.

The longer and deeper you go, the images stay a little longer, as if you were now driving slower than the speed of the cars on the highway and looking out your window.  They still fly by you, but you can "hold" onto there image a bit longer.

There finally comes a point when you're going the same speed, and you can "lock" onto these images.  This is where the magic happens, and you can phase into the astral realms.

Ok I have a new one for all of you out there in Ap'er land.

Sometimes, and I don't know how to control it yet, but sometimes when I close my eyes and do somebreathing, try and relax still my mind, I get those pale color flashes behind my eyes, usually some variation of purple, off shade black, or pale white.  The coolest one, is when I get like alternating pulses of white and purple where it seems the entire field of vision comes together and forms a purple circle in the center and then rockets away from me, as if shooting down a pipeline, and the whole field of vision around the purple circle/dot which goes from large to small as it gets further from me, becomes white now, this field forms a circle and shoots off, then the field is purple, and it alternates like this for a long time.  Does anyone have any clue what this is at all?  I feel like I'm sending some sort of beacon or energy out of me, but it just goes in pulses away and away and away.  Any thoughts?  anyone else have this?  significance?  Love to hear what you all think.

Be well,
J
