I don't know, but I know I had many "flying" dreams as a child. These dreams always stood apart from my other dreams, because I actually felt like I was flying; and I always could fly at will. Could we actually be OBE in some of our so-called "flying dreams", and not aware of it?

I was not yet aware of what the OBE experience was when I had these dreams as a child - so wouldn't have classified them as OBEs or lucid dreams. Although I did have a spontaneous OBE at around 5, which was different than my flying dreams. I was floating above my bed, and *knew* I was actually out of my body. With these dreams I can't be *sure*. But then again, they say all/or most of us have OBEs when we sleep, and we just don't remember them. Maybe some of these flying dreams are blurred memories.

LadyEowyn

Well I really wasn't dreaming, I know that for sure because I had to keep my eyes closed for it to work, if I opened them I didn't feel it anymore...

Blaze, I've also had flying dreams, not too many and not nearly often enough! How do you feel when you wake up from those dreams? Mine invariably leave me feeling just super-envigorated and joyous -- the most pleasant dreams I've ever had! [8D] And you're right, I could always fly at will in those dreams -- even showed other people how to do it in some instances. It was a glorious feeling! I haven't had any for a long time and I miss it.

Blaze, you raise a good question about whether the flying dreams are actually OBEs. That's one reason I'm trying to consciously OBE, to find out!

LadyEowyn, yes, I can do what you describe to some degree. But I don't know if it's related to OBEs or not. I get a stronger effect if, for instance, I am out on a boat (small boat) for a considerable period of time. Then when I lay down at night, my body still feels the rocking sensation of the boat on the water. It's a really nice feeling, but it has to be some sort of physical reaction because it only happens that strongly when I have actually been in the situation.

all i know is, as a child I used to feel the "elevator" feelings before I went to sleep

also sometimes ill be in a dream and then BOOM, I know its a dream,
I then can fly for a while until the dream takes hold of me again,
so far Ive only had about a dozen lucid dreams, but I haven't had an OBE

some people claim an OBE is along the same lines as a wake induced lucid dream they claim that an OBE is very similiar to a lucid dream

staying lucid in a dream is very difficult, and I haven't heard of any one in an obe started to believe that the OBE was "reality" as you would in a dream

dream's are very hard to control, even once you become lucid its easy to become engulfed into the dream, but I think OBE would be much more controlled on your part, but I still do not know

"In our dreams we fly like gods, why? because we used to be able to fly"

Volcomstone, that last quote of yours is interesting. One thing I recall very clearly from my flying dreams is that I do know how it feels to fly. Once I dreamed I was picking up a nice, juicy, hamburger from a plate. I could see it, smell it and feel it in my hands. I knew exactly how it looked and felt because I've been there before. Of course, when my teeth chomped down on thin air instead of the burger I expected, I woke up -- hungry and sniffing for that burger! [:P] It's the same with my flying dreams. I know what it feels like to fly. I know what effort is required to get off the ground and the control needed to land. Logic tells me there's an explanation for this, but I don't know what -- yet.

volcomstone

that last quote was from an anime movie, it struck a certain cord with me despite the movie being rather lame

anyhow, like you said, I know what it is like to fly
Ive gotten high in my dreams, ive done impossible things, and Ive thrown fireballs etc,

why is flying such a strange occurance for us humans? was it fitting that 9/11 attacks involved flying?
anyhow, If one person can fly like a yoga master, than ANYONE can fly, and itll be easier for the next person to learn it,  so good luck and Ill see you in the sky

holy reality

children are naturally capable of amazing feats of the mind but are conditioned by society not to use them

i remember discovering how to open eye hallucinate and how weird/fun it was....

i told my mom about it and i'm not sure what she said but i stopped doing it.... something convinced me it wasn't "normal" and I shouldn't be experiencing it.

i have a theory that kids naturally trip like crazy but somewhere along the line their imaginations/gifts etc are shattered.

i don't ever remember doing anything remarkable or having insanely vivid hallucinations or an exceptional imagination, but then again I don't remember much from childhood.

This reminded me of one time when I was goin to meditate but it was dark enough for me to keep my eyes open without needing to blink I was watching the ceiling with my eyes open and I saw things in a sort of ripple in a pond.  This made me sort of get surprised and caused it to go but I then tried to mentally will one of these ripples to appear and they did with more of the same thing.  I also will often times see things when I close my eyes if I want to but it's not my imagination, it's like a projection on my eye lids that looks like a light leftover thing but when I concentrate goes into colour.
Also to LadyEowyn it seems to me like it's keeping your focus away from your body on something that can't be done on the physical which could cause an OBE and maybe you were partially OOB but still partially in your body. It could be that perhaps it just became repeatative and the more it repeated the more vivid it became.

just seeing others really harping on the flying subject right at this particular time is kinda nifty because of my focus on a daydream-like experience i had while trying to go back to sleep the other morning.

well, i was with my dad in a nice new vehicle of his (which he will get soon anyways, too bad i can't go along for one of the first rides). we were driving down some street and i briefly noticed something going on to the left of the street behind the strip mall, but didn't pay much attention. i told my dad to let me out at the cross street up a few feet and i went off to the right and did some things at random...mostly just walking around (and it was a really hot day too! but there were brief gusts of wind). now that i think about it i think i had to mail a package or something...so i went into this combo video game/comic book/etc place with a ups/fedex place in the back(?) oh yeah and a bar up some ramp off to the side (or was it an arcade? i forget) i handled my business, but my dad was nowhere to be found (searched outside for a while and was waiting on him for a bit). i had to call him on his cell! bah i left my cell in his suv...ok back to the video game place...after extensive searching i found this big metal phone that you would unlock like a newspaper station and it was $1 in quarters per call (i also asked if i could use the store phone to save money...no luck). after unsuccessfully getting a hold of him i went over to the left side of the road that was at the beginning...it was a big 2-3 story white building and there was a party going on, and it was also starting to get dark...was a "goth" type party (meaning people were wearing black with silver stuff and black and white makeup mostly) and i stood out...everyone was staring at me, but i just chilled out with the people in this sofa room (they were drinking and doing unnamed stuff which i declined when offered) and everyone briefly talked for a bit at a time...i got tired of the party and went out to look for my dad and such again...

...FINALLY THE INTERESTING PART...
while looking for him i was getting tired of walking and spending days and days looking for him, which i did it seemed like. after a while i started to run and got tired of that...so i summoned my will up and started to push higher and higher, almost like i was creating air under my feet with every step and began to fly about 10 feet up as i ran...and i could keep up with traffic! the problem is i still couldn't find my dad...but i was having FUN not finding my dad! I got better and better at this "running flight" and can still describe how it works...

...HOW IT WORKS...
while doing something physical to where you're basically slightly dazed and trancelike, think about that you're going very slow and it's annoying for you to run and run and run, so you need to do something different (DON'T think about flying). keep running however and get more amd more dazed, and try to climb and invisible mountain in front of you slowly while NOT thinking about flying, and pick your legs up higher without really picking them up. in the dreams at that point of first flight my legs felt chilly like i was running during a slightly nippy day (maybe about 45 degrees F), and then it felt like a new wound was slowly building up under my muscles and on my skin at the same time...like a cut...and it slowly got less and less noticable. during the entire flight i was unwinded and felt great...was only sweaty when i stopped! after a while i could stop running my legs and i would just stop in mid air...and when i started back up the sensations would come back but for less time.

now onto the feet! it felt like they were overworked with energy and pushing it out. they felt balmy cool as if under heavy blankets on a warm night and they were lined with sweat...warm but cool at the same time.

...that's about it really. i think i described a lucid dream pretty well there and maybe the flight info can be used in some way. MOOOO
I come prepared...with COOKIES! No, you can't have one!

It's quite a rapturous and dare I say "realistic" experience.. so some of the euphoria is still lingering when I first wake up. I can honestly say I know what it's like to fly, and it is awesome. Maybe that "quote" is true, and that's why the whole experience feels so familar to us.

I've noticed in several of these "flying dreams", I am being chased, and it's then, at will, I just fly away from whoever is chasing me. I guess if this is happening in the astral realm it is negs or astral beings who don't know who I am. Or maybe I am misperceiving them as "enemies" I need to flee from.

Interestingly enough, I believe Robert Bruce has written about people flying around the astral planes, that are not even aware they are OBE. They think they are dreaming. Maybe he has seen us. [8D]

LadyEowyn, was there more to just closing your eyes and visualizing that, meaning did you build up to that level over time as a child? It'd be interesting to see what steps you took if any.

Mostly for me I have to be in some type of dream AND moving my legs in some way (sort of like swimming...you HAVE to thrust your legs in such a way to keep above the surface).

For future trials, I suggest you try to have a goal behind what you do if you can...like instead of down, the leaf floats upwards (and other similar things to see the limits of your ability)

All I had to do is close my eyes and imagine that I am feeling it and after a while, when I'm relaxed, I start to feel it, that's it, nothing else.
I do not remember when I first did it, I can't remember developping it or taking any other steps.

Also remember being able to go any direction, not just down, it's like I'm in a flying bed in space. With a leave I meant going a little faster and then a little slower, like a leaf does, from side to side, I just have a little trouble finding a better description in English [;)]

Now that I think of it, trying to do it clears my mind and since I have a hugh trouble shutting my mind up otherwise, maybe I can just use this to clear my mind before trying to OBE...

LadyEowyn

I haven't been able to OBE yet (as far as I can remember [;)] ) so I don't know if this is related.

When I was a child I, while in bed, liked to close my eyes and imagine myself in my bed floating in space, as a leaf falling down from side to side, and after a while I felt it actually happen, I felt myself flying in my bed...
I also know absolutely sure that this was not a dream, I could still open my eyes but then the feeling would be lost.

Now I'd like to know if this is in some way related, or helpfull to OBE?

EDIT
I tried again last week and I can still do it.
But I don't feel anything else, like vibrations or other things described here that could say that it is OBE, I've never felt those things...
