help with ki PLEASE!!!!!!

me and my friends have been studying ki for the past 4 months and it is coming on very well. but there is just one problem-
HOW DO I KNOW THAT I HAVE FIRED A KI BLAST!!!!

me and my friends have tried it on each other, and nothing happened[!]
please help.
