that is wierd and in my oppinion really not necessary, not at all, maybe it makes things easier but, go get yourself a really cushy chair, does the same thing

Ronk, I have always wanted to go into what used to be called isolation tanks, think tanks, and now floatation tanks.

Dr Lilly was a pioneer and probably way ahead of his time. Not only was the movie Altered States based on his work but the book Altered States that Paddy Cheyevsky wrote that the movie was an adaptation of was basedon his work but also the movie Day of the Dolphin, was based on his work.

The theory behind the tank is that you remove all external stimuli (to include prssure from a cushy chair, gopherboy455) so that there is nothing connecting you to the real world once the tank is closed. They used to use a magnesium sulfate, epsom salts, solution to create maximum bouancy and the temperature was kept at external body temperature so that, again, you didn't feel it. What this is supposed to do and does is induce the mind to create its own stimuli.

To me that would be equivalent of exploring the universes within yourself. What an exploration that would be, eh? [8D]

If anyone would like to know more about Dr. Lilly's work, here is his home page.

Back in the late 80's I used to drive from where I live about an hour and a half to go to a place called Samadhi in Los Angeles. They had a nice setup with 'flotation tanks'. You would rent the tank for a specified time period, such as an hour, and just 'float'(inwards [^] ). When you stepped out of the tank it would lead to a private shower. Very nice.

Back then, I read everything I could on John Lilly. He lived in Malibu, about a 30-40 minutes south of Ventura, CA (where I live). There exists still his works in books, and the above mentioned websites. It's nice that people still know of him.

whoa, altered states was one trippy movie. at the time i thought it was quite fantastical, but the more i've learned about metaphysics the more i have learned that just about everything John Hurt when through was possible (mostly anyway). Did he use drugs at one point to induce another state of consciousness? That would actually be very dangerous to try, although i'm sure it's pretty guaranteed to work.
If but we knew the power of our thoughts we would guard them more closely.

Hi, and welcome to the Astral Pulse forums! [:)] It is a small world, and I'm happy to see a new member from Ventura.

The flotation tank is an amazingly simple natural way of experiencing all kinds of altered consciousness. Remember the film Altered States? That was based on the originator developer of the float tank Dr John Lilly. His main interest was exploring altered states of consciousness and his main tool was the floatation tank.

Read his great books The Deep Self and others. Also Tanks for the Memories.

For info and to buy your own cos once you get started you'll want your own (they are not cheap but they do sell 2nd hand ones)[Buy a flotation tank][http://www.oceanfloatrooms.com]
