That is alot to explain, It would be a lot easier to do a search on it yourself. That is what i did, found quite a bit of info on it.

Or you could read Brian Greene's "Elegant Universe."  It is quite an interesting read.

I would also like to add that I read this book before it became the "cool" thing to do.

It is also an easy read and has a lot of pictures to explain the ideas.

Dont look at the world around you with your eyes, use your soul, and you will see more then you have ever imagined.

Basically, the five string theories are different aspects of the M-theory (the one stirg theory).  First you should understand that the five string theories are all based in ten dimensions, whereas the M-theory is based on eleven dimensions.  This added dimension is what fixes the problem.  It is similar to this analogy:  think of a cube; if you look at the cube two-dimensionally, there are six different objects (the square sides) ; however, if we add a dimension, there is one object (the whole cube).  Hope that helps.  Please tell me if that was a bit ambiguous too.

P.S.
The reason Edward Wittle unified the five string theories was to keep it alive.  If String Theory was THE theory of the universe, there should not be five of them.  Due to that problem, people began to abandon the string theories.  So, Edward rescued the theory from its potential death.

When people talk of string theory it conjures up an image in my mind of fine resonating strands, strands that are the resolution of the fabric of space encompassing the hole universe.
It can take on a variety of values above a base level but all well beyond our current detectability, light is just a resonance of this fabric???

Just a thought
