Seeking advice

Hello there, people. So, with this first post, I'd like to ask few questions. When I tried to project 2 years ago for my first time, I almost did, but unfortunatelly got too excited. The problem is, I couldn't do that ever since, so I decided to take a break. As the time flew here I go again, trying to solve this and sucessfully leave my body. So for now, I'm trying practise at night. A lot of people mainly advice  to do this at early morning or afternoon, but I find it really hard, because I'm just usually too wide awake for this.

Laying down, I focus on my breathing, trying to clear my mind. By some time I started to feel warm feeling in my hands and legs. Soon I began to see images (this is called hypnagogic state, as far as I know). Also my hands appeared to be free of the body. Than the white light above my closed eyelids started to intensify. I somehow knew, this was the time to 'break through', but I just couldn't. I tried to use force, but it was a mistake, as it seems. Next day I searched a web and found, that if you try to use force in order to project, you can accidentally move your physical muscle, which will cause a descend trance (this is mabye why I couldn't do nothing more after I tried to project like this).

So there're my questions. Am I right about what I did wrong? Was I even close? And even if I did, what shall I do to sucessfully separate from my body? Thank you in advice. I'm really interested in this stuff, so I'd appreciate your help.

I would focus on the light and follow it with your mind see what happens with that.

I used to try real had to force projections and it never worked.  Even if I didn't move a "physical" muscle. 
Once I started just laying in bed and letting the river take me - more of a go with the flow intent, that's when I had my first.
Also, I learned that when I thought I was "Breaking through" my body it, I didn't have any success.  It wasn't until my intent was to phase over my consciousness peacefully, did I have my first. 

My advice would be to stay calm and observant, focus on the white light, and don't force anything.
