i do recall the holding your friends neck or breath or whatever until they pass out thing. i've never heard about the dream addition part. it's always been a quick blackout.

Did he pinch the neck somewhere in the region under the left jaw?

If so he's triggering what's called the Vegas nerve. I can't remember the exact purpose of this nerve, except for being some kind of defence mechanism. Basically what this nerve will do is trigger a very fast relaxation process in the brain which will usually make you pass out.

Ive had a similar experience that involved deep breathing while bending over then upon standing up right a person would push quickly on the chest which held in the last breath.
The only time I did this I fell backwards and suddenly found myself sitting in class.(which is were I was supposed to be http://www.astralpulse.com/forums/images/icon_Smile_wink.gif" border=0> )The experience was as real as as if I were actually there.

What exactly is taking place and where are we going when this stuff happens I dont know. What I did sounds similar to what you were doing and I suspect it has something to do with over oxygenated blood.

Peace!

Tom

It has nothing to do with overly oxygenating the blood. During normal breathing, the oxygen saturation of the blood is around 98%. Small variations are difficult to keep track of. The brain does not monitor oxygen levels. Instead, carbon dioxide levels are monitored. Hyperventilating drops the carbon dioxide levels of the blood. Because the blood is normally almost saturated with oxygen, it does not take on more than usual. When I hold my breath for a minute, even, I do not pass out. It isn't comfortable because my brain is trying to restart breathing to fix my carbon dioxide levels. The techniques to rapidly pass out do not take a full minute, so I suspect that they do not simply suppress the impulse to start breathing until the oxygen levels drop too low to sustain consciousness. The other thing which happens is that as carbon dioxide levels drop, the pH of the blood is affected. The pH of the blood is very carefully regulated. Several years ago in school I read that a change of 0.2 in the pH can be fatal. Normal pH is supposed to be around 7.2 or 7.4. I don't remember. Carbon dioxide when dissolved is acidic. Flushing out an acid from the blood makes the blood more alkaline, so the pH goes up. My guess is that it is this change in the blood's pH which causes the techniques for rapidly passing out to work.

I've heard that people can die from this. I've passed out a few times using that technique, and didn't have any dreams.  I could think of better things to do with my time!

Is this like that Vulcon Death Pinch thing? Spock was pretty good that. I wonder if he ever tried it to have OBEs.

Alice had got so much into the way of expecting nothing but out-of-the-way things to happen, that it seemed quite dull and stupid for life to go on in the common way.

Thanks for the clairification on that Tom.I didnt know that before but find it really interesting. This might explane then why someone who is giving blood might pass out as did a friend of mine two weeks ago.
He said that while giving a small amount of blood for a test he said *suddenly* found himself sitting in his living room looking around confused and a bit nervous, this lasted for what seemed like 10 minutes. Not understanding what was going on he came to and realised he was sitting in front of a nurse who said he appeared wobbly but quickly came around.
( now hes all big on the o.b stuff)
I didnt know how to explane his experience nor do I still know where he  went. Its a question ive had for a long time as outside of whats normaly disscused on o.b.es ive been to other places that were just as real as any o.b.e ive had. Were those o.b.e???
At least some of them I think would have to be as ive read identical descriptions in at least one book on o.b stuff from a person who was projecting all natural.Buhlmans description of being one with the universe, been there, done that exactly as he states.Only I was not laying in bed shifting from a vibrational state.I was standing upright starring at the stars.(I always knew I was going somewhere)at any rate the circumstances around that pirticular experience involved a heavy drug that is known to constrict bloodvessels.(ummmm yummy http://www.astralpulse.com/forums/images/icon_Smile_dead.gif" border=0> )

So could it be said then that the change in the bloods ph can induce o.b.es?
Ive never really understood why deep breathing was so good for realaxing and iducing. But now thinking back to my first o.b.e inwhich I was awake the vibrations came on after taking several deep breaths as I tried to meditate myself back to sleep in the early a.m.

Would a change in the bloods ph be nescary for the right condition to o.b?

Hope these questions make sense.

Peace!

Perhaps I could describe my experiences with passing out. At first I had brightly colored dreams. Then I would wake up and not remember my name, what I had been doing, or where I was. It was impossible to remember anything for a few seconds. Gradually the dreams became longer and more detailed with "practice" but they stayed rather short. Then a new development began: I started to have minor siezures. A couple of times I was still hitting my head on the floor when I woke up. It did not feel good. I stopped doing it.

The other day some friends and I had been sitting around when one of them demonstrated a technique on 2 or 3 people where he stood over them, they took 10 quick, deep breaths and held the tenth as long as they could while he pinched their necks at a certain point. They passed out for a few seconds, but claimed that they experienced 30min-2hours worth of dreams, some of which were lucid. I tried it, but something didn't go right.
I'm not sure what it was, but when he pinched my neck I must have paniced or something and had trouble breathing. When he let go, I fell back, but only blacked out less than a second and experienced no dreams, but instead had hickups for a few hours.
Anyone hear of this, and is it safe (should I try again?)
