Some people tell me its hypnagogic.

I would be about to fall asleep when I notice the blurry image of the back of my eyelids changes to what I'm imagining. Its different than imagining things while awake or daydreaming. It looks like whatever I'm imagining is really there in front of me as if my eyes were open. If I let it do its own thing, it mostly stays the same shape but sometimes gradually changes shape and color to morph into other objects. I can control this. Its basically a lucid dream where I have instant control over anything. Most of my lucid dreams still leave me with less than full instant control because to take such control wakes me up and I move between having less and more control. But this thing when I'm just about to fall asleep is far more bizarre. Its like I paint objects in front of me and they really exist at the same time.

I know its not real. Its just the lower layers of my visual neurons getting into some kind of unusual balance.

It may help in aligning brainwaves to real things out there, but by itself its of course not real. I want to learn to do it again to help me sync my brainwaves with metaphysics and other things.

This used to happen to me often but gradually over the years not much anymore. I dont know what I'm doing wrong.

Once they start, stay calm. I use this at times to create scenes. The same thought process can be used with sounds too. Create a symphony and conduct it as you think. Both these are as real as it can get and great fun.
Too much emotional interaction and it can end it all.
Treat it as an experiment where you know the outcome, this reduces the surprise factor.
Its also a way out into the NP. The scene eventually starts to come to life, once this is established you'll find yourself  able to interact in any way you wish. You become Parr of the scene as in an LD.
There's far more where the eye can't see.
Close your eyes and open your mind.

I'd love to try that, but it doesnt start on its own except rarely anymore. What should I do?

I have found a distinct lack of sleep helps.
For one night only have half your normal sleep. If you are constantly deprived of sleep, get much more than normal.
There's a balance on the tired side to take advantage of that works for me. You relax and where you'd normally crash out, stay aware in mind and the hypnagogic noises kick in. Its here when the fun starts every time.
No guarantees as its something natural to me, I can do this in a few mins at almost anytime.
You ideally should start to feel tired late in the afternoon. This is helpful in an automatic start as your body wants sleep, your mind does too but this part is only applicable when the mind and body are functioning together is, awake. When you start to fall asleep deny this mental tiredness and this thought manifests into a clearness of mind.
Have fun experimenting.
