Are you sure?  With a screen name like yours?  What a great screen name for an evil mage!

Seriously.  If you are interested in Wicca, go to your local bookstore, ask for the metaphysical section, go there to the Wicca shelf, close your eyes, and reach.  Buy the first book you touch, it simply does not matter, in the very beginning.

If you like what you read, go to the nearest big city, and start lurking around coffee shops and co-ops.  Read their bulletin boards.  You will come across advertisements for the next "open full moon circle."  Show up.  If you like what you see, start hanging out!

People fear that which they do not understand.
Alice had got so much into the way of expecting nothing but out-of-the-way things to happen, that it seemed quite dull and stupid for life to go on in the common way.

Lilith

Wicca is a religion, actually, not a system of magic.
;)
They believe in the reality of magic, but casting spells, per se, is not necessary to being Wiccan.
(Depending on semantics, casting a Circle can be considered casting a spell, or it can simply be considered creating sacred ground.)

I do actually know some Wiccans that don't cast spells - other than their sacred circle for religious purposes, of course.
;)

shaman

Completely right Lilith!

Most of that are ceremonies, processions, where the witch light candles (of all size and colors) with insens (herbs,..) and make a prayer. Especially the white magic, there are prayers to God actually. So it is really a religion in that sens of the term. Eventually an experience wiccan does not need the candles, the herbs, and all that, he/she just needs her/his will, or the power of the prayer if you prefer.

White magic is also in accord with the Earth and Nature (including stars,...). (green wizardry).

It is actually not very far from shamanism, in that sens that shamanism does not make any "dark magic" but only "positive magic". There is the sorcerer who might be doing some dark magic too, but the Shaman only deals with white magic when he/she deals with magic.

What's to understand about black magic. It's the use of subtil forces to intrefrie against someone's will. Some people have principles and don't want to do that.

To the author of this thread : I suppose wiccans believe that if they write some rhymes about a certain subject and then sing it or read it with firm devotion they will somehow have magical power. Do you honestly think things work like that?

Lilith

No, KooLGZe, that isn't what Wiccans believe.

Wicca is a religion. They are followers of the Goddess, and believe that all things are possible, and that we are each responsible for all our own actions -
"Ever mind the Rule of Three
Three times what thou givest returns to thee
This lesson well, thou must learn
Thee only gets what thou dost earn!"

Thanks, Shaman. Yes, Wiccans do use elements of Shamanism, Wicca is a fairly young religion, based on European shamanism but with bits added from many different systems.

I repeat, not all Wiccans cast spells, and there are many many different "branches" of Wicca.

KoolGZe

I was talking specifically about spells.

Aristoles

I follow a god,i just dont know who yet :)

Lilith

Ah.
Then you perhaps meant to say "some people", rather than "wiccans"?
No disrespect intended, but you seem to be saying that people who cast "spells" are misguided or deluded or such.

What's the difference between saying a rhyme with intent or prayer, and following a formulaic ritual?

As it happens, the Wiccans I know beleive that we *all* have access to magic, that many people use it without intentional knowledge of spell-casting, and that in fact, the stronger the intent and focus, the better the "magician" can manipulate magic, thus self-discipline is a necessary component to successful magic, regardless of which system is used.

KoolGZe

Sorry for using a less correct term then. Still tell me, do you personally believe spells can work that way?

Lilith

yup.
[:D]
The human mind is a powerful thing.

Hey I want to become a wicca and I was wondering what are some good beginning spells? Of course I refuse to do anything that is Satanic, evil, and harm others so forget it.
