I know almost nothing about wands/staves but, isn't the important part at the tip? Like a gem/crystal at the tip of a staff... I heard many people use crystals...

Sorcerers tend to use elemental staffs. Wizards use wands.

Absolutely not!

Wands - by themselves - contain very little power that you can use.

Sure, there is tree power, crystal power, etc., but this power tends to have its own agenda. The power to SHAPE and DIRECT this power comes from YOU.

For the most part, when it comes to beginners, I have discovered wands are props that shape the mind, to make you THINK you are doing something magical, when in reality your finger will do just fine.

If you are VERY in tune with a certain tree or other wand material, go for it, get or make a wand if you must, but then the magical activity is more about your RELATIONSHIP between yourself and the item in your hand.

I have a beautiful wand on my altar, made of crystal and blown glass. It was a gift. It sits there and looks pretty.

I use my finger.

HAHA you guys are funny, tree power? most wands aren't even wood. No the real use for wands is as a focus point for energy, and yes your finger is also a focus point for energy. A wand essenially can just be alternating layers of orginic and non-organis stuff wraped around a tube with one end sealed off, this will attract and trap energy inside it usually sending it out the open end. Wands are really only usfull for beginners who can't focus energy like me

Absolutely correct, wands and staves are tools, and whether one uses one or the other or either is really a matter of preference.
However, I do disagree with the point that they're only of use to beginners.

Tools can be used by anyone, and a practiced Witch (or whichever title you prefer) can use a wand to very good effect indeed, creating a powerful tool by storing energy within the wand itself, or simply as a focus for thier own manipulations.

Look at it this way, a person can do the math in their head, but the slide-rule will make it easier, and the calculator easier still.
Magic and Magical tools are similar.
Some people use their tools to very good effect indeed!

Personally, I use my finger, too... hands can be very expressive.
