Time dilation

If you have an analog clock with a second hand, you can try looking at it after relaxing and calming the internal dialogue. If you succeed at it the second hand can appear to stop for much longer than a single second. It is not necessary to be under unusual stress to change the way that time feels.

You've noticed that too Tom?

There has been more than a couple of times when I've looked at my watch or the clock on the wall and it seems to have taken at least a few seconds for one second to pass. During that time I almost feel like my heart has stopped beating. It's a very surprising feeling!

James.

Usually my first reaction is "the clock broke" or "the battery died". It was, however, something I read about in a yoga book. It can be done intentionally, but the effect is much stronger when it is spontaneous. Irritating, too. It also annoys me to see auras spontaneously.

The heartbeat thing is very interesting. I will have to watch for it.

What about your perception of the surroundings??
ANy changes in overall awareness??

Everything seems normal, except that any people around me have the courtesy to wait for me to finish considering the matter. It would be better if they would be more understanding about waiting for my attention to return to them, though, because everything feels so different afterward. It is as if I am returning from somewhere and it feels disconnected from before.

the_demigod

sounds as if time and the 3 dimensions were separated and then had trouble rejoining...

Objectively, nothing would seem to have happened. Space-time continued normally. I simply withdrew from its normal operation somewhat and returned to it.

jilola

I have a rather loud ticking clock in th eroom where I meditate and I've noticed the same things w/respect to time. The time between two ticks or occasionally the length of a tick seems to stretch to well over the normal.

Also sometimes my reaction times exceed my capability to perceive the events I'm responding to, I can see what's happening but things feel slowed down and surreal until after my response.

A still mind distinctly accentuates the effect even after returning to normal mental state.

Sure, mind over time. Still, I would hesitate to start tossing about words such as "chronokinesis" or "lentation". Nor would I want to make up my own words to describe the effect. It is an interesting and curious effect because it is a sign that psychological time is not a constant.

jilola

It's a self-caused change on the perception of time.
What it means, that time is a perceptional illusion, we can control time, there is no time that flows at a steady and measurable pace, I don't know. But the subjective change is remarkable and reproducible.

If we indeed live in an illusion as some religions and spiritual systems teach then the effect should be taken as a major waypoint. If we don't I think the usual soluciton would be medication[8D]

Which would point towards the truth behind the Alchemical "ageless state".
Once you mentally NEGATE the very existence [or at least the ROLE] pf time, you stop ageing.
Some other consequences stem from that as well, but they are SCARY [in their potential]...

Dear the_demigod,

Such an experience could be easily attributed to an increased production of adrenaline in your body. Adrenaline is a hormone secreted by the adrenal medulla in response to stress. Have a quick read through this link to find out more about the effects of adrenaline.

I agree with adept_of_light, usually when dangerous things
happen very quickly my brain, too, goes into overdrive and
I can think in split seconds. I don't neccessarily think this
is due to adrenaline, though, I think that we are simply capable of
thinking at much higher speeds than we usually do.

The most disappointing time experience that keeps happening to
me is that when I'm in a class and I look at the second hand of
a clock, it slows down from a much faster motion ( the second hands
in my school don't tick, they just spin ) into an awfully slow
crawl. [:(]

jilola, every time I go into deep trance, while using my heartbeat
to go into it, I notice that it stops beating. Also the clock thing
happens quite often, in my opinion this is just a standard
result of being in trance - namely not being able to hear sounds.

bye everyone

Ya the slow-down thing happens to me too. But sometimes it happens before whatever happens actually happens.

You know, I notice this sometimes.

When it's late at night (About 10:30...the time I am usposed to goto bed) and I sit in bed "training", I notice that time goes by so slowly.  If I sit there thinking about just my day, I'll look back at the clock and it'll be like 20 minutes past 11 all the sudden. But when I am practicing, I'll look back and it'll be like 10:45!  I know you may seem to think that I'm just looking at the clock at different times, but it feels like my sessions are lasting for like half an hour.  When I'm thinking, it seems like no time has passed at all. That's why I'm astonished to see the clock!

Medical and scientific studies have shown that the human Central Nervous System (CNS) is responsible for regulating our perception of time. Certain foods (nutmeg), drugs (LSD) and meditation techiques (sensory deprivation) alter that perception of time (sometimes dramatically). Conscious and deliberate intent can also alter perception of time to a limited degree.
Though I have yet to read any reports of a relationship between out of body experiences and time there can be no doubt that time perception in the ethereal plane, and especially in an astral plane, is MUCH different then here in the physical world. [:O]

A few times in my life [usually when having the crap beaten out of me :-((] I have had the surreal pleasure of experiencing time dilation.

At a particular point in the "situation" everything would slow down. Except my mind. The development permitted me to perceive and COMPREHEND many things simultaneously, and observe the movements of other humans in slow motion and with absolute understanding of their [final] intent.

Any1 else??
