Anesthesia

I recently went to the hospital for some minor surgery. I was put to sleep with for about 2 hours. During this time I did not dream or have any concept of time. I was laying there before the procedure trying to project. This was a failure. Maybe I was too worried and tense. I had no sense of being alive at all while I was under the influence of the anesthetic. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? If all this OOBE stuff was in our mind and a simple chemical could stimulate it or prevent it, that'd make me ponder. Or maybe you can project but there is no way to remember the experience if the mind is under the influence of drugs.
