For morning practitioners, how much sleep do you get before having an OBE?

I can't seem to find the best possible time to practice due to my irregular schedule. I am just curious how much sleep do you need in order to have a succesful OBE in your own personal experience? I have been trying with 4-6 hours of sleep without much success, so I am going to try with 7-8 hours of sleep. Also, when you practice in the morning, do you get up to go to the bathroom and then come back and OBE, or do you just wake up and start your OBE technique?
I know everyone is different, but I was reading once again the pinned topic "Why can't I project" by David Warner where he gives statistical data of his OBEs in different time periods, so I just want to compare and pin point where are my mistakes. (in other words is timing my problem).

Hallo rangestormer

Lately I have had several OBEs in the morning. I usually get up around 5:30 to 6:45 AM. And then stay awake for 60 to 90 minutes doing meditation and pranayama (breathing exercises). And then I will go back to sleep for anywhere between 1 hour and 3 hours.
The good news is that I have had maybe 8 to 10 OBEs during that time period during the last 6 weeks.
The not so good news is that those OBEs have happened irregularly anytime during that 6:30 to 10:30 AM time period. It all seems random to me and If there Is a pattern there I have been unable to detect it.

I have the best results when I wake up two hours before 'normal' wakeup time.

I do it everytime I go to bed. I dont meditate or put any time aside to do this. Dont let it become a choir or something that might even take time out of your schedule.

Let it be a part of your natural process of going to bed. When ever your tired and its bedtime, lay on your back, relax and give it a go. If you miss the exit and and drift off, chances are you will wake up throughout the night and this is a perfect time to try again. Sometimes if I wake up throughout the night I wont move or even open my eyes. I just stay in the same position that I have been sleeping since I dozed off. This is also a perfect time to induce it, and also an easy way to have multiple obes back to back for a long time.

If meditating is part of your life, thats great. But dont think its necessary that you have to do stuff like that to achieve an obe. Its not like you need practice this to maintain it. Once you become successful at it you will know how to it and then its just deciding when you want to do it. When your going to bed, do your normal routine for an obe. If your tired enough your body will fall asleep, just maintain awareness and dont let your mind fall asleep with the body..

Like Grey said, they happen at all different times.
Its really up to you and how relaxed your body is to enter this state. You go to bed every night cause your tired and your body needs sleep. Take advantage of that and fall asleep but keep your mind awake. A way to look at it would be meditate at bedtime and aim for sleep. But never lose awareness and mix in whatever you do to induce one.

Just upon awakening is the best time for beginners, if you ask me. Hands down... no doubt about it. But these are often very short projections.

After about 5 hours sleep is very good too and the projections last longer... sometimes much longer.

When I first started trying to project I got up at 3am nearly every morning for almost two months before my first conscious projection. If you have an irregular schedule you have to work around it. On those mornings that you have time you must dedicate it to this effort. The question becomes... How dedicated are you?

Are you making daily effort? Are you keeping a dream journal?

Hi,
The mornings are better, motion seconded.
Now I'm getting older I find a visit to the bathroom helps tremendously. It may be something the body requires as trying to sleep normally with this 'requirement' is also difficult.
It's worth consideration.
There's far more where the eye can't see.

Just as CFTraveler said, 2 hours before wake-up seems to be a prime time for an attempt.
I usually like to wake up, momentarily open my eyes to check the time, and attempt without moving my body too much. 5:30AM seems to be when most of my experiences take place.
Also, for me, there seems to be more success when i get a good night's sleep. If i go to bed any time out of the usual norm there's a lesser chance of projecting.

I got to say I hate this method of AP that you guys are talking about where you wake up in the friggin  middle of the night and try to meditate! How the heck do you meditate when your half asleep??? I don't think AP is worth it if that's what it takes. What I do is when its time to go to sleep I lay down on my bed and do breathing exercises until I fall asleep. If I do that I AP during the last segment of my sleep session and I don't have to wake up at 3 or 4 A.M. Plus I fall asleep quicker and I feel deeply rested in the morning. I honestly feel sorry for people that put that much effort into AP cause I would imagine that they are waisted the next day due to lack of sleep!

wake up in the middle of the night to project!

meditate during the waking hours.

two totally different things.
