Ego Issues.

So I was having a conversation in my native tongue, which I am not very fluent in, with a stranger. So I was also replacing certain words with their English alternatives. But the other person had never learnt English. By the end of conversation I looked very stupid. I felt awkward and I couldn't stay there any longer. Coming to the point, we have all had our share of awkward moments; the question is, why does this happen? It lingers on for a cruciating amount of time. I am aware it is due to the damage of our self created image about ourselves, aka the ego - something which me must not possess, or transcend in order spiritually evolve. So how do we do this? I'm sure this would also put an end to our 'awkward' moments.

PS: At times I try looking at myself in a third person view, which helps as a relief, but clearly isn't a cure.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.
The answer to all questions is earnest self enquiry, "Who am I?"

Your subject line explains "why" perfectly.

Ego.

You're ashamed of looking silly.

Figure out how to stop worrying about what others think of you.  :)

You say that the ego is something we must not possess. You are right to a degree. The key for losing it is to accept it for what it is. We need the ego in 3D-reality in order to limit the nonphysical information flow into our consciousness. It appears that i am contradicting myself. I will explain it. If you (consciousness) accept it as a lower harmonic, then it will begin to resonate with your higher self which is on an octave higher, but only if you accept it. Resonance increases the nonphysical information flow into your consciousness. You become enlightened (for a moment). But to reach nirvana (to use an eastern term) or permanent ego loss; it is possible, but it comes with side-effects like insanity and extreme bliss (but this is kept hidden from the public). Insanity and godhead are more closely related than people use to think.

meditating on ego is a way to destroy problems with it, but I think it can be hazardous if you are unprepared. the reason being ego death can be quite scary. :|
Personally, I believe that this is one of the big misunderstandings in regards to spirituality.
You can't kill the ego... or you can't NOT have an ego.  You'd cease to exist if you didn't have an ego.  It's what allows you to survive in this world.
Your ego controls all your requirements needed to survive.  You wouldn't know when you eat... sleep... etc...
The unfortunate side of the ego is that it also controls the negative side of you as well.

So, without the ego you would die... what happens is that you learn to exist THROUGH the ego.
You control the ego, you don't allow it to control you.  The more you progress... the more you become Love... the less control ego has upon you and your actions.
You start to realize that you never "react" to situations in life... you only "act".  You realize that there actually is no such thing as "reacting".  Acting then becomes a choice.

I struggle alot with my ego too, but now I just accept it. It's much easier,  because really no one care, when I realised that my life got much easier. If I feel awkward and have a problem with it its gonna feed the awkwardness.
One "method" that really works for me is to sit in front of a mirror och look into my own eyes and face all the feelings. It's like meditation. It's quite funny, after a while looking in to the mirror the face starts to change and it looks really scary. I believe that's the picture I have of my ego.
It feels like the need to not look silly and stupid in front of people is the biggest problem with my life.

Sounds like something related to a past emotional trauma to me.  It could have been something as minor as an insensitive passing comment from a loved one, or could be as bad as a period of long-term abuse to your self-esteem.  Maybe I am off but the fixation upon a certain feeling like this reminds me of what Jung called a complex, as in a complex grouping of thoughts and feelings that has been learned and may not necessarily be the most helpful for you.

There are lots of ways to release this kind of thing.  But it will have to be emotionally engaging, because just thinking about it intellectually will not impact the "circuits" of your body the same way (to borrow a metaphor from Robert Anton Wilson).  Forgiveness for yourself, forgiveness for others, acceptance and thankfulness,  these are all powerful things.

Ho'oponopono healing mantra, for yourself and everyone and everything else:

I'm sorry
Please forgive me
Thank you
I love you

The ego is a natural part of modern society. We couldn't function in society without ego but we have to watch it and can't let it supersede the real being inside of us.  You seem very conscious of your ego as indicated by the thread title.  I think you already pay attention to your ego.  So again I think this may be some emotional baggage you have picked up somewhere in your life that has become an unresolved subconscious complex.  We all have subconscious complexes that have to be resolved.
