Nightfall

Creed by Steve Turner
We believe in Marx, Freud and Darwin.
We believe everything is OK
as long as you don't hurt anyone,
to the best of your definition of hurt,
and to the best of your knowledge.

We believe in sex before, during, and after marriage.
We believe in the therapy of sin.
We believe that adultery is fun.
We believe that sodomy's OK.
We believe that taboos are taboo.

We believe that everything's getting better
despite evidence to the contrary.
The evidence must be investigated
and you can prove anything with evidence.

We believe there's something in horoscopes,
UFO's and bent spoons;
Jesus was a good man just like Buddha,
Mohammed, and ourselves.
He was a good moral teacher although we think
His good morals were bad.

We believe that all religions are basically the same –
At least the one that we read was.
They all believe in love and goodness.
They only differ on matters of creation,
sin, heaven, hell, God, and salvation.

We believe that after death comes the Nothing
Because when you ask the dead what happens they say nothing.
If death is not the end, if the dead have lied, then it's
compulsory heaven for all excepting perhaps
Hitler, Stalin, and Genghis Khan.

We believe in Masters and Johnson.
What's selected is average.
What's average is normal.
What's normal is good.

We believe in total disarmament.
We believe there are direct links between
warfare and bloodshed.
Americans should beat their guns into tractors
and the Russians would be sure to follow.

We believe that man is essentially good.
It's only his behavior that lets him down.
This is the fault of society.
Society is the fault of conditions.
Conditions are the fault of society.

We believe that each man must find the truth that is right for him.
Reality will adapt accordingly.
The universe will readjust.
History will alter.
We believe that there is no absolute truth excepting the truth
that there is no absolute truth.

We believe in the rejection of creeds,
and the flowering of individual thought.

If chance be the Father of all flesh,
disaster is his rainbow in the sky,
and when you hear
"State of Emergency!"
"Sniper Kills Ten!"
"Troops on Rampage!"
"Whites go Looting!"
"Bomb Blasts School!"

it is but the sound of man worshipping his maker.

timeless,

Thank you for the nice post. A book I've read a few months ago by William Bulhman, it's his second, called: The Secrets of the Soul has some great insights as well.

A reviewer wrote:The chapter," Transformational Experiences" describes numerous life changing out-of-body adventures. This is where Buhlman has documented past life recollections, higher self-experiences, God Awareness, and the overwhelming message that we absolutely exist beyond our physical body. One of the more intriguing testimonies is that of an incarcerated survey participant that describes his spiritual adventure".

So you might be interested in reading it if you haven't already.

Sounds like a man worshipping everything of this earth, everything sensed of this world.  Doesn't sound at all like a guy worshipping his creator.
Yup, when humans have nothing to worship, they tend to worship themselves.

I can't remember the author but she was a school teacher who asked her students who the 3 most influential people they could think of were.

One student said "Michael Jackson, Madonna and Brooke Sheilds" and on and on it went.

She said she expected these sorts of answers but she was shocked when one kid said "Me."

She had expected Mt Rushmore to be replaced with rock stars and movie celebrities, but she had no expected it to be replaced with a mirror.

Interesting words, would it not be easier to say "Each individual is a part of the universe.  That universe being god.  A drop of water in a lake so to speak."  I think it gets caught up in the words too much though, basically the first paragraph is reworded to make 4 other copies of it.  So as not to do the same myself, I'll stop here at about 1.2 paragraphs.

"...and forget all the complexity and words of religion."
[:D]
Sorry, just find the a bit funny, using 4 paragraphs of words to tell people to forget about the complexity and words of religion (no insult intended).

Doesn't bother me about you going "on and on", after all was my choice to read it, just mentioning that sometimes a summery would do good, expecially for thouse who can't make meaningful content out of thouse paragraphs (religious converstation is about another language when it comes to thouse who don't follow that religion).

I really like this quote.  It says a lot and is VERY thought provoking.  I like this because it puts into words why I have always felt God cannot be put into words.  As soon as we perceive we have missed the point.  To perceive is to pass information through the senses.  Language is based on perception.  God just IS.

"I had concentrated all the faculties of my soul.
When I looked into myself, I saw God in myself and
everything God ever created in heaven and on earth....

I have nothing to do with angels or saints or anything
that was ever created. More: I have nothing to do with
anything that has ever become word.... I am confirmed in
naked divinity, in which never image nor form existed.... I
am where I was before I was created; where there is only
bare God in God. In that place there are no angels or
saints or choirs or heaven. Many people tell of eight
heavens and nine choirs; where I am that is not. You should
know that all that is put into words and presented to
people with images is nothing but a stimulus to God. Know
that in God there is nothing but God. Know that no soul can
enter into God unless it first becomes God just as it was
before it was created.

"You should know, that whoever contents himself with what
can be put into words--God is a word, the kingdom of heaven
is also a word--whoever does not want to go further with the
faculties of the soul, with knowledge and love, than ever
became word, ought rightfully to be called an unbeliever.
What can be put into words is grasped with the lower senses
or faculties of the soul, but the higher faculties of the
soul are not content with this; they press on, further and
further, until they come before the source from which the
soul flowed....

"You must understand this thus: The soul is naked and bare
of all things that bear names. So it stands, as one, in the
One, so that it has a progression in naked divinity.... So
you should know that as long as the good person lives in
time, his soul has a constant progression in eternity. That
is why good people cherish life."

The above is taken from Buber, Martin, "Ecstatic Confessions," (San Francisco, Harper and Row Publishers, l985) Edited by Paul Mendes-Flohr, Translated by Esther Cameron, pp. 155-156.

So what do you think?  The unbeliever is a little harsh?  Or does the word unbeliever symbolize just how trapped we get in physical reality?
