Satan...symbolic Promethean rebel. He is right for feeling the way he does. He's been cast out for speaking his mind. I feel for him. We need some of him in us. Negative...sometimes, can be, but in general...NO. Positive in maintaining our egos so we can survive in this world. Yes. Saviour of the trap of falling in COMPLETE altruism. Yes. He is a very much needed saviour. Provider of temporary pleasures. Absolutely. Teacher...you bet! Spices our reality? You bet! Necessary...yes! Real? Not in a million years.

personalreality

what does real mean summer?

everything is real.

but yea, i think you're on to something though.  it's more appropriate to look at satan as the complement to jesus rather than the opposite, the balancing polarity.  you can't have yang without yin.
be awesome.

what does real mean

In this context I meant having an objective existence...which Satan does not.

Archetype- and I agree.  Zorgblared.

Not just negative but Evil. Accuser, opposer, destroyer.

I don't believe in Satan  but if there was/is one, I think he is suppose to be evil.

Satan - noun
the chief evil spirit; the great adversary of humanity; the devil.

Origin:
before 900; Middle English, Old English  < Late Latin  < Greek Satân, Satán  < Hebrew śātān  adversary

So it depends on whether you think being "the great adversary of humanity" is negative. Clearly it is evil... by definition (see above). Pretending that evil does not exist does not change the fact that it does exist.

Actually, no one here is prtending evil doesn't exist. As Pauli2 stated, it is the people who end up in hell who are evil, and, according to his well thought out perspective, Satan is doing a good deed by punishing them. He's good. ;D

If he's evil and the enemy of all mankind, then God is a bigger knob for creating such a being. While Satan is like an honest Tony Montana who says to God "you need people like me so you can point your finger and say: that's the bad guy", God is the one who tells porkies about the only angel who dared to oppose him, and a hypocrite in saying he had nothing to do with Satan's atrocities. He knew what the Devil would do! After all, isn't He the ALMIGHTY? Pfft! And how dare He have bets with his enemy in regards to predicting human behaviour in certain situations?

But then again, it's poppycock, in my OPINION! ;D

Satan is evil by definition (provided above). That does not preclude an evaluation of his contribution to the Grand Scheme as 'good'.

There is plenty of evil well beyond this idea of natas.

That sounds like anti-Muslim bigotry to me. [The "Great Bovine Excrement"... hmmm doesn't have the same ring to it....]

Is satan good because he "punishes evil"?

Also satan was forced into hell by god for trying to overtake heaven? Maybe I'm wrong I havent read the bible or talked to much catholics.
Sounds pretty evil to me if he belongs in hell.

The Scriptures are not crystal clear on Satan.

From the Catholic Encylopedia;
...but both the early Fathers and later Catholic commentators agree in understanding it as applying with deeper significance to the fall of the rebel angel. And the older commentators generally consider that this interpretation is confirmed by the words of Our Lord to his disciples: "I saw Satan like lightning falling from heaven" (Luke 10:18). For these words were regarded as a rebuke to the disciples, who were thus warned of the danger of pride by being reminded of the fall of Lucifer.

Most of what people hold is more folk tales than actual doctrine.

Remember, Satan is an Angel.

Satan is the highest Angel.

So Satan is good.

A good Angel, who punishes all those evil, in Hell.

Lucifer, Light Bringer.

Let him in.

God kicked his "teenage" son out of his house because he was a rebel...great parenting skills, lord! Do not contradict what daddy says because daddy is always right and never makes mistakes. Lies lies lies! On top of that, he sends his son to the worst place possible...under the bridge!

I say Satan is better! All hail Satan! He is my lord! I believe in him! It is my religion! You better respect my beliefs, Rudolph! I'm a devout Satanist so watch out!

One comment regarding christian mythology- Satan in the bible is not the same as lucifer in the bible.  Two different characters, two different stories.
Satan=Saturn, the adversary
Lucifer= Venus, the light bringer (morning star).
The combination was made after Jesus was named God incarnate, and he needed an archenemy, since God 'unincarnate' couldn't have one.
