AP Chat?

Even better, people who want to chat can make their own arrangements to do so via MSN or an IRC client.

We have thought about installing a chat feature into AP but we don't really feel there is any point seeing how readily available chat features are to MSN, ICQ etc.  

We also feel that with a proper message forum like this, which requires a bit of decent thinking before typing, the process results in a higher quality service with good quality discussion and decent information (hopefully!).

I think that IRC is the best idea for AP chaters. Astral Pulse should open IRC server or maybe Jabber.

If someone has broadband on a computer that is always on I'd recommend running a ventrilo server because you can do text chat and voice and both the server and client are free. Skype is also pretty good but they both require downloading a client and some setup. On my site I use phpopenchat from http://phpopenchat.org and SigmaChat from http://www.sigmachat.com (free version).

OpenChat requires a MySQL database but it's easy to configure and is a low bandwidth chat system AND can be incorporated into phpBB (this forums script). SigmaChat just requires signing up and is a java based system but it works quite well and anyone can set it up so Adrian doesn't have to be bothered.

I don't think there's a need for a server dedicated only to AP. Feel free to come to #astralpulse @ quakenet or ircnet. We can keep the channels up on both servers, but if the other one gets more users, then let's concentrate on that one. (so we can get everyone to the same place)
