There really is no best place to start, it all depends on the person.  Some people jump straight into APs, while others only ever do LDs.  My suggestion would be to just start with one and see how it works for you and the move on to another one, if need be, pending your results.  Also this method for many just kinda automatically leads them into the areas that help them the best.

In my opinion the biggest thing that helps with lucid dreaming is the ability to remember your "regular" dreams, or actually any dream activity.  This will also help if/when you decide to start trying AP.

Many people who do dream work and such keep some kind of log or journal of thier experiences.  This also helps many with memory rentention and can help to bring about awareness while you are dreaming.

I forgot to mention that the forums have a rather good search function which get you a lot of information on the subject with out haveing to read through every post.

A few tricks:

Read everything you can to saturate your brain with the subject.

Every 15-20mns during daytime, ask yourself if you are dreaming or not, and do a reality check...  Be very "serious" in your checking; don't just check for half a second.  Or, more generaly, just be more lucid during daytime.

Before falling asleep, repeat over and over and over something like "tonight I will be lucid"...

Setup an alarm clock in the middle of the night and just fall back to sleep while willing that next time you have a similar dream (that you just had), you will be lucid.

Good luck!

Thanks for your advice. I'll look into some of the suggestions and attempt the techniques you've provided.

I'll tell you what I like to tell everyone I meet who might be interested in astral projection.  Read "Soul Traveller" by Albert Taylor.  We have a Borders bookstore here in town which carries that book, so I'm sure you could order it or find it in most big chains.  It's not so much that the book is incredibly informative that makes it a good one to read first, but that it's short and to the point.  And, at the end of the book there are techniques.

The most important thing about a technique to me is that I never give up on it until it works.  I think pretty much all techniques have worked on my, but some better than others.  The technique that worked the best for me is as follows:

I stayed up all night from about 6:30 am - 6:30 am the next morning.  When I laid down I used an affirmation technique.  What I mean by affirmation technique is that I simply stated, "I am lucid in my dreams" over and over.

Another thing before I go...   go get "Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming" by Stephen LaBerge.  You can get this book in most large chain stores as well.  It is a wonderful book for learning to lucid dream.

Good Luck!

Cheers, there's a Borders in the city which is where I go to make all my literature purchases. I'll head there on Monday and look at your suggested reading!

I've recently decided to begin exploring my spirituality, and attempting to bring understanding on who I really am, and my purpose. I've been doing varied research on a number of subjects and it appears that Lucid Dreaming is the best place to start before progressing to OOBE, AP, and Soul Travel, among other things. Is this true?

I would also like to learn some techniques and exercises that work best to induce Lucid Dreaming, would anyone have links to websites that I could read to gain this knowledge?

I appreciate everyones time.

Regards,

-Alex
