Ok, I have a few questions. I have been projecting more frequently now, and I'm starting to get the "hang" of it. Every time I have projected though, I have been more or less asleep. Up until recently, when I actually started to project, I always thought projecting would be an entirely conscious thing, and I think that's one of the mistakes many people first starting out make. I mean personally, from many of the techniques on exiting that I have read, it always seems like you lay there then all of a sudden this intense vibration comes, and your experiencing it like you would experience making a sand which or something, fully conscious. From my experience, this has never been true, every single time I have projected, it has either been from when I was asleep, been when I was dosing off, basically asleep (because I wasn't aware of anything), or been when I was coming out of a deep sleep, but still asleep.

So basically to project, I've realized you have to be asleep, or going into sleep, and pretty much, not conscious at all, accept for when the vibes start, then I usually snap out of my sleep and realize what is happening. So my question is, is this for everyone? I mean, for everyone out there who projects on a constant basis, or has projected, do you usually have to be asleep, or in a very light sleep? Is this light sleep what they call a "trance"? Because I honestly can't see how anyone can stay conscious before exiting, it kind of just happens for me. I'm not aware of anything usually, accept for when the vibes come. So is staying conscious before you exit something that comes with practice? For example, Frank, if you read this, were you like me in the beginning, I mean, having to be pretty much out of it before you project? If this is true, then it's true that a lot of the techniques of misleading. I know from the countless times  I have tried to project in the past 6-7, (probably over 300 times) I have never felt more than light vibrations, and by light I mean very very light, when trying to project being fully conscious.

It makes sense to say you have to be asleep, because you have to trick your conscious mind into thinking that you are asleep. Maybe I am a little bit conscious right before I feel the vibrations, because actually, I never know the exact time when they come. It could be like 2 seconds right after I dose off, making it true that I am still a little conscious, as I am entering lighter sleep. I just wish there was a technique that allowed me to stay conscious while asleep, because I think the clarity of your projection depends on how deep asleep you are at the time of the projection
(from my personal experience).  I know if I could just stay the tiniest bit conscious when I am falling asleep, I could project every time I try to, but it's extremely hard to stay conscious, and if I do, it's usually like a very blurry disoriented conscious. Also, I have noticed that I project more in the morning, when I have to pee or something, then go back and lay down, and dose off. This is why I think drinking a fairly large glass of water before I go to bed is a very effective technique! Although it is similar to the alarm clock technique I guess, but more natural :) Thank you very much for reading, I hope you have some answers.

Hi, Tony and welcome.

You make a very good point; one that most beginners don't realise. In order to project, you pretty much DO have to be asleep. In fact, projecting-straight-from-meditating doesn't usually come until after years and years of practice.

Most initial projections are pulled from a dream. Check out this post in the Astral FAQ for more info:

Hi Milk,

Welcome to a fascinating forum! From my own experience I know you don't have to be asleep to project. While "out" I am not aware of feeling anything in my physical body. I can see it, but "I" am not there, so I can't say what may be going on "back home."

However, I also believe Kodemaster is right. The trick is in the words "at will." I have so far been unable to remember going OBE when I decide I want to do it. My conscious, waking OBE's have been totally spontaneous and occur through no actions of mine.  :?

Aunt Clair raised a point in another topic that we all very likely OBE frequently in our dreams -- it's just that we can't remember it when we wake. That made so much sense that I am trying now to develop ways of memory control while dreaming. What the hey, it may work!  :)

Kodemaster, your comments are also encouraging. If perseverance is the key, perhaps I can one day reach my goal of getting out consciously whenever I want, waking or sleeping!

Hey greatoutdoors, do you have a quick link to that Aunt Clair post? I've been having little flashes lately of maybe being out later in the day, but too vague. I think you're (and she's) really onto something there. Thanks either way.  :)

Almost Solid,

It was just a brief reply to a question I had asked, but it struck me as being pretty logical. You know how some things just resonate inside and you know it has value.
