I have been trying to have OBEs on and off for a while and think I had one last night. The first question I have is how do you tell the difference between a dream and a successful OBE? The experience after finally getting up this morning was hazy feeling like a dream would be and so I did not know how I could tell the difference between an OBE and a dream.

My experience last night was this. I woke up around 4 am and decided to try projecting. Next thing I know I am traveling down my hallway and I remember making a mental note to take a running jump through my front door to the outside. I actually felt scared that I would run into the door. :) I wanted to go outside because it was raining and ever since learning about OBE that was one of my goals to go out and fly in the rain. Next thing I know I am flying over my street in the rain no more than 3 houses away from my house. I am there for only a minute or less and I remind myself that I need to remember this experience and not stay out long. I aim straight for my house chanting as I am flying "I am going to remember this".

There were points in the above experience that I do not recall such as being in my room or traveling back through my home back to my body. Gaps in the whole experience so to speak. So my second question is do some OBE's have some 'inconsistencies' when traveling such as 'how did I get here?'.

Thanks for any help

ka0s

You can have some inconsistencies. To be honest you will recognize an OBE when you have one and it wont be questioned. Some of my experiences have matched the clarity of physical consciousness.

You'll find that as soon as you think of being somewhere, you will go there or find yourself there quickly. It is the Intent that makes the connection and instigates the movement.

Sometimes you will be somewhere instantly, other times you may pass through some misty fog and arrive where you intended, while you can also direct yourself on the way and take longer if you choose.

I prefer to let myself go where ever I am meant go. I also always go "as if naked", meaning not having any expectations or beliefs about what I can or can't experience. I call it active observing so I interact without creating mental input... that way what happens next is always fresh and spontaneous.

Thanks a lot both Ka0s and Tayesin.

I guess because of this was my first experience that felt really real (while feeling hazy at the same time) I was very concerned about two things: Not staying out too long because I have read that if you are new to OBEs and stay out too long that you will run out of energy and the whole experience gets lost or something. And two, to not go too far from my home. With those concerns in mind I made sure to remind myself to remember the experience and I guess I thought my way to where I wanted to go as you said Tayesin and this led to the inconsistent "how did I get here".

Also, I remember one slight feeling of vibrations while out because I decided to take notice of them, but never recalled the actual getting out/in feelings or noises that many say they feel such as a pop, heart chakra pounding, vibrations, electricity, etc. Is this normal or is it more common to have some kind of exit/reentry sensation?

I thank you both for sharing your wisdom as I read many more posts and keep at this thing.

Some are going to outright disagree with me on this (you dont need to reply to this telling me you do lol). I think people look too much into the whole staying out of body too long in terms of relating to energy. Honestly I have stayed in OBE long enough to feel it was months of a different existence. Keep a pad and pencil or buy a voice recorder to record your initial experiences. It is important because you can get in a habit of recalling things better. I dont have any vibrations when I exit my body. Here are some of the things i specifically encounter during exit (many people vary quite widely):

The first thing to note is im usually laying on my back. I usually look down at my legs and notice that there is a parallel set of feet floating above my physical legs. Usually my "head" is the last thing to "part ways" from the container (or my body). If I wear a necklace, such as my cross, I notice a bit increased difficult in leaving my body. Some sensations I feel:

Usually I notice a blue haze around my immediate area. I literally begin to feel lighter before I initialize a "rolling motion" to fall onto my floor :P. If I exit my body while laying on my side I never have to roll...I sort of shoot out of my body like an arrow. I feel a distinct separation and a need to "re-align" before I physically wake up. If I dont align properly I usually have some crazy hypnagogic hallucinations upon physically awakening, or I have really loud buzzing noises, hear voices, etc. The very though of wanting to return to body makes me return, though. Its like going from point A to point C with skipping B when you return. When I exit my body it feels I am going from points A-B-C. The analogy I have always made of my inducing of my OBE's is always the same that i mention here...

It feels like I am in a large lake and the deeper I go the darker it gets and colder it gets..When I get near the bottom I turn on a switch which forces my mind to stay awake while my body is asleep. I literally slow my breathing down and battle with what is the "verge of sleep"..It feels like your drifting deeper and further to that verge...and I spark my mind awake when close to that verge. That is when I feel separation. I can also paint pictures within the blackness of my eyes and turn that into a lucid dream.

I also only really travel to areas around my house and more recently outside to begin flying. Even so, I usually stay close to the house. There are only a few instances where I have actively tried to visit friends or what not and do verification experiments. There is only 2 occasions where i felt i "astral traveled" to other planes or other parts of the world. Usually those are completely spontaneous and unplanned. I am very much a Christian but I am very open minded. There are some topics here that I simply skip and cannot believe in because it defies my religious beliefs. I think the first thing I usually do while OBE is thank god =). It took quite a few trials for me to understand whether or not these experiences were a gift and something I could/should accept.

The only reason im giving you a detailed response is because you genuinely seem curious and are willing to do some homework. Some of the threads around here lately in my opinion are people expecting direct answers as if we are clairvoyant eyes of a divine power. It's just bothers me when people dont do much research before asking 1,000 questions here :)

I hope this helps and gives you some insight. I probably wont post something so long again unless i feel inspired. ^__^ Greets to everyone else who keeps this forum interesting.

Thanks Ka0s your post was amazing. You are right that some people expect others on this site to be a know it all in everything metaphysical. I am much a student of knowledge and have read many things by Robert Monroe and Robert Bruce such as Astral Dynamics. I also have viewed a video course offered free by gnosiicweb.com. It is good though to have a venue such as these forums to be able to ask questions.

I also know how some things can conflict with the Christian doctrine. I recently stopped practicing Christianity due to these types of forums, conflicting belief systems around the world, and other personal issues of seeking out truth. I took a step back in by religious beliefs that I have been brought up since I was nine months in the womb so to speak to analyze what is truth and what do I believe. I guess you could say I am a searcher right now, a searcher of truth. If I come back to Christianity, great, but I am only a seeker right now and hold no official title of religion just yet.

I want to thank you once again for your post and you are correct that I am genuinely curious and actively doing my homework. There are so many threads in this forum and I try to read about 4 - 6 a day to increase my knowledge.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Well I am sorry you feel that way.  If someone is new to Astral Projection they can feel quite lost.  They can do research and read books, but it makes them feel better by hearing it from many people.

I have asked questions before, but I have also done my own research.  Sometimes hearing others techniques or insights will help.  If you find it inconcient to answer them then dont.

If I ever have an OOBE/AP and become knowledgable in it.  I will make it my duty to be patient with anyone who has questions and need help.  Because for alo of people, believing in this can be stepping out on the edge for them.

It is not that i dont want to help others with achieving this state. I agree with you that the insight of others is a great thing. I just think that in certain instances there are some questions that are asked which prove that there was no research done before asking, or are complete flamboyant questions. In my opinion I feel that believing is the first step before even having one. A lot of the power to actually have one I feel comes down to the limitations some put on their minds. If you believe and are strong willed I think with proper practice and dedication anything is possible :)

I will be quite honest and say, the only book on OBE's I have read is Robert Peterson's "out of body experiences" how to have them and what to expect. I have on the other hand done much research into Robert Monroe and the monroe institute. While i respect people wanting to know as much as they can from the feedback of others, I think some are too pressing for answers rather than willing to dedicate/commit themselves to their own "truths".

iamhere2learn: I was able to find peace with my religious beliefs, and if anything it has brought me closer to God and has strengthened my religious views. I respect your seeking or "wandering" and I hope that in time you find the answers you seek.

Here is some encouragement to keep trying

11/24/2008 – 9:27AM – OBE occurred where I floated out of my body and the next thing I knew I was in the sky above the house. I saw a lot of purple orbs and dots as if I was in a higher plane. When I physically awoke I saw these dots as hypnagogic hallucinations as well in my ceiling. OBE #2 – 9:33AM – Exited my body and had no clarity during the experience. I couldn't see anything and tried using clarity now command and I was finally able to see the living room. The experience itself seemed really long even though it was hazy. I went into the kitchen and I looked out the door around the house and I noticed that the sky was purple and I could see the trees. I felt like once I got out from underneath the porch past the stairs to the patio I felt like I was a little scared. It was really dark around the yard but the sky was a distinct purple. I think that these were both great experiences today and it reinforced that there must be a greater purpose for me having these experiences. After I was outside I went back inside into the living room and saw my mom sick and curled up on the couch (I did not get a chance to look to see if there was anything surrounding her or anything like that). I need to further pursue my attempts to view my mother while OBE since she has been sick for over 3yrs.

12/04/2008 – 1:28PM – Exited out of the left side of my room and proceeded to go outside through the front porch. I looked up at the sky and it was as if night was falling. I thanked God and used clarity command but it didn't improve the vividness of the experience today. The attempt at flying failed today when I tried. During the 2nd experience I decided to try to focus on some inanimate objects and words on objects in the house. I went into the kitchen and was actually able to pick up a pencil. I picked up the pencil and tried reading the side of it. There were some letters on the side of the pencil and some strange bands of symbols. The letters never make sense when I try to read them. I was thinking today consciously if it was some sort of code? The words never match anything in English. I tried picking up another pencil and wasn't able to read the second one either. It started with a letter similar to "E" and ending with a letter "G", but by no means resembled the exact letters. The "bands" of symbols had an italic type font to them. The "words" were written on the one side of the pencil and covered its entire length. After this I got frustrated with trying to read the pencils in the basket near the refrigerator. I returned to my body and physically awoke with no hypnagogic hallucinations.

Oh I know that you can tell come people havent dont any research.  But just finding this site can be a big step for someone who is just curious.  They arent going to do the research because they arent committed they dont really believe it yet.  So I give them the info over and over again, hoping they start on their own.

UMMM.....I think I will type out all answers to questions that you always read and save them.  That way all I have to do is copy paste!!!  and not keep typing all the time

A couple of thoughts:

1) I wouldn't worry so much about whether something is just a lucid dream or OBE or AP. In what I've gathered through reading and experience, these are all inter-related and are different ways of "focusing" or "phasing" your perception. There is a tendency to view these things in the sense of the material world of here and there, past and present, which is a mis-perception IMO. Frank Kepple's article on phasing here on this site changed my concept of what lucid dreaming and astral projection are.

2) After the experience, as the memory wears older, it starts to feel more and more like a dream. Like you weren't really there. This is a time-based distortion. Think of what you ate for breakfast this morning. Were you present the whole time? Does it feel real or more like a dream when you recall that experience? Now, if you were eating breakfast and a giraffe kicked your door down and walked into your kitchen, how real would that memory FEEL? I think my point is that you have to look at each experience as progress instead of questioning whether you "got there" or not.
