Does anyone know how the first people tried various psychic fields such as astral projection, psychokinetics, telepathy, invoking powers into this world with magic?

About a 1,000 years ago Tibetan Yogis applied Buddhist Tantric teachings. Especially,

                 
THE SIX YOGAS OF NAROPA

1. Yoga of Psychic Heat, better known as Tumo. The foundation and ongoing support of the Path of Means, Tumo is the only one of the Six Yogas which is practiced throughout its entirety. It depends on the absolute retention of generative fluids -- sexual, endocrinological, and psychic -- for the conscious redirection and transmutation of subtle energies for spiritual purposes. In its most subtle and transcendent form, Tumo is known as the primordial energy at the very core of all manifestation.

2. Yoga of the Illusory Body. This practice begins as a powerful psychological technique. Through studying his mirror reflection and then visualized images of his own body, the aspirant comes to understand the arbitrary and illusory nature of perception. Next, he projects all his subliminal self-imagery, positive and negative, onto this image and thus disentangles himself from the web of identification with these things. Then he visualizes his Yidam, his personal Patron Buddha, and identifies his consciousness with it. He must transform his mundane life into the archetypal realm or body of the Buddha: his friends become Bodhisattvas, the outer world becomes a Mandala, and all incidents resonate with the Self-Illuminating Void.

3. Yoga of the Dream State. By maintaining waking consciousness during the nocturnal dream state, the yogi comes to realize the equally illusory nature of both the waking and dreaming conditions. Not only must he remain conscious while asleep, but he must also learn to dictate the incidents of his dreams, eventually performing heroic magical feats in his dreams. Through this practice the psyche is purged of many of its habitual limited assumptions about the nature of the manifest worlds.

4. Yoga of the Clear Light. According to the Tantric tradition, everyone experiences the Clear Light of the Void shortly after death. Its brilliance, however, is so overwhelming that the departing consciousness usually recoils in fear and is drawn instead into another samsaric rebirth. By learning to recognize the transcendent Light of the Nirvanic Buddha Consciousness during his lifetime, an adept may return to it without difficulty when the shock of death threatens to disorient him.

5. Yoga of the Bardo. The Bardo is the "nowhere" realm between death and rebirth. It is also the "nowhere" of the present moment. Whichever way you look at it, this yoga confronts the adept with his own naked and unmodified karmas. If he has not been sufficiently strengthened by his previous sadhana, he may easily become entangled in this display and fall into a realm corresponding to some aspect of his own karmic destiny.

6. Yoga of Consciousness Transference. Mastery of this yoga enables the adept to direct his consciousness at death through an aperture in the crown of the head to a chosen incarnation or a realm of light. This is his means of transcending the mechanics of karma and rebirth when he dies. The most desirable realm, of course, is the Dharmata, the Buddha realm of pure luminosity, the transcendent Light of Buddha Consciousness.

This is for all the Monotheists out there.
The tree of knowledge and the tree of life are both in the middle of the garden. There is a serpent on the tree of knowledge. O.K. what does this mean?

The tree of knowledge is the brain, look at a chart or something, the left & right hemispheres are the foliage, the spine is the trunk, the sacral nerves are the roots.

The tree of life, it's exact location is in REV 22:1-2, its best to read it from the "KING JAMES VERSION", because the NIV turns words around and omits entire verses, I kid you not.

Lambs were sacraficial instruments, and the spilling of blood was considered a blessing. Maybe when the woman had her period it meant she wasn't pregnant, and they considered that as a blessing.

So basically the brain is the The tree of knowledge, the genitalia is the tree of life, BOTH IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GARDEN,
The snake is the spinal cord, the river of the water of life is the cerebrospinal fluid. Hence, the Garden of Eden, the Garden of Paradise, is the human body.

The tree of knowledge thinks a single thought of lust and the tree of life begins to blossom. If you waste this lust on a temptation/sex, the chemicals in that bodily fluid after converting into other chemicals is lost (e.g. to come) weakens neurochemicals in the brain, thus making one weak and tired.

Now if you can refrain from SEX, but at the same time build the "horny" feeling up and up, you will actually strenghthen the brain/mind and your will will be done on earth as well as in heaven. Amen. ha ha Amon-Ra.

yeah, nobody really knows how the first humans became involved in Occult practices... we could speculate all day and by nighttime.. it'd still be speculation.

how did they first use rocks and other things to attempt to use magic here in the physical world?

Traditional view is that all things sprung from the root of shamanism, which is very much spirit and altered state stuff.
Further, Terence McKenna would have said that before shamanism was The Mushroom, if you get my drift, and that this acted as a catalyst to wrench open the higher functions of the human mind.

Personally I think all these views are rather arrogant and stupid! This is because they are just extensions of the standard model of human evolution, and societal evolution. This is the preconception that our civilisation is the first of its kind, and that it appeared from a rather linear model of cultural growth as soon as homo-sapiens (us) appeared. In reality, humans have been here, in our modern form, for at least hundreds of thousand of years, and probably millions. So its slightly impossible to say who the first to practise this stuff were, or in what form it happened!!!!
People think its shamanism today simply IMO because shamans are associated with "primitive" tribal cultures, and the general assumption is that 10,000 years ago all there was were there tribal societies. Hence it would seem to follow that this is the first form of spirituality.

Personally I prefer to think in terms of cycles of varying size whirling continuously around eachother in a maelstrom of change, with peaks, troughs, crests and all sorts of funny things happening, but hey!!      

As for the first people to play with telepathy and etc well, given that the evolution model is correct, then it probably happened when that primordial swamp created a second microbe!! (my point, for anyone who missed it, is that animals are psychic - oh and that modern humans are actually less so, on the whole)
