As a nurse, I have dealt with these ulcers (bedsores) a lot.  They are so difficult to manage.  Two things we had luck with was putting SUGAR in the crater.  Sounds unbelievable, but it sometimes works.  Also a clear plastic dressing (there are several brands..Tegaderm is one) is very good.  We saved a man's lower leg with this method.  Massage the area around the ulcer to increase circulation.  Good luck.  This is a heartbreaking situation for you...will be sending many prayers for his healing.
God bless.....dovelady

Hi again,
The proper term for what his sore is a decubitous ulcer. It was level 2 until it was debreeded, then it seemed to tunnel outward. I'm not sure if that actually happened before the debreeding or after, regardless, it's to the ischial now.

Hard to believe sugar would help! I can try, but I'll microwave the sugar first, I keep that thing as clean as a whistle and wouldn't want to risk an infection right there at the bone. Before it was debreeded I did use Tegaderm, all that did was lock the fluid in. Too much tissue was already necrotized. Now I wet pack the hole as best I can with sterile gauze and saline, covering it with yet more gauze.

They want him in a special sand/air bed for 3 weeks, that's why they want him there in the hospital, because those beds weigh a bloody ton and won't fit here in the house. I'm looking into alternatives now, I want him home where -I- can control his care, not 2 or 3 nurses having to service an entire wing.

Thanks for the thoughts and prayers, they are appreciated :-D

Dear K9,
Lots of love to Shaun,...
these decubitus ulcers can take months to heal. The main thing is to keep his immune system as high functioning as possible, to assist in healing, Plenty of nutritious freshly squeezed friut and vegetable juices, wheatgrass juice, etc, etc,
Next..important that he is turned regularly so that he does not develop any more ulcers anywhere else. That's why the special bed at the hospital is important. The bed is instrumental  for recovery.
As for the dressing.. there has been success with honey dressings,( I have not heard of the sugar recipe here in Australia). Look on the internet for more info.
Next.. state of mind, attitude ..also instrumental in healing..Shaun needs a stress free or at least a low stress environment for healing.. Plenty of humour or whatever makes him relax.
So of course, it goes without saying...love love love!!
Love to you all,
Danuschka

Since it's this thread has been up awhile how has your son recovered? It's sad and disheartening to hear of how your little son suffered so I'll say a prayer for his good recovery and yours.

Hope Shaun is improving.
It's gotten here in the States that people feel they need to be with their loved ones to see they get decent care.
Sad to see what medicine has come to.

I won't ask for much, as I don't know the abilities of you all :-), but I ask that you take a moment if you can to send my son Shaun healing or a little prayer for his recovery. I'll give a short an explanation as I can...

In June 2001, my son was walking home and was hit by a car. The driver left the scene and he lay in the driveway until the next morning. His neck was broken, as well as his legs and many other bones, and he sustained a brain injury.

Since then he's maintained fair health, but he has developed a pressure ulcer on his behind he must go have surgery for later in september. He'll be in the hospital 3 weeks, which of course worries me. Hospitals are not known for their germ free atmosphere, so I want him out of there ASAP.

My desire is that he not need surgery at all, that the sore would heal, but it's too large. The surgery will be extensive and it will take a toll on his over all health, as surgery always seems to do. All I can do is my best in giving him as much healing as I can on my own, and perhaps a gracious few will assist...I would greatly appreciate it.

Robert, if you read these posts; I used to write back and forth with you often. Email me if you have time and I'll tell you who I am. It's not my intention to come here only to ask for help. My wife (Shiela, remember?) asked that I get on and see what you were up to. Looks like you're doing pretty good bud! Keep on it! Drop a line :-D
