How do your parents feel about AP?

Well, for anyone who has told their parents. See, I tried explaining to my mom about it when I had my first OBE. She attacked me with facts that weren't true.
"IT'S SO DANGEROUS!"
"WHAT IF YOU CAN'T FIND YOUR WAY BACK TO YOUR BODY?!?!?!???!"
"SOMETHING WILL TRY TO TAKE OVER YOUR BODY!!!!!!!!!!!!"
"DON'T EVER TRY THAT AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I don't blame her. I mean, she's not as interested into spiritual stuff as I am, and is actually quite afraid of it.  She would not listen to me when I tried explaining to her that I will always be able to get back to my body, that it's NOT dangerous, and NO ONE will possess me while I'm out. -____-;; I even tried explaining to her that we all AP at night without knowing it.

She would not listen. She made me promise not to try again. She thinks it's a sin. I said "Okay... I won't." (what a lie)

But heck. APing is so much fun! I project almost every night! Nothing can stop me.  Plus, I'm making more progress with every experience.  I do feel bad for lying to my mom, but this isn't even terrible. There is nothing wrong with APing. I wish she would understand so I can tell her of my experiences as soon as I wake up. =[

What do YOUR parents think of this?

MisterJingo

They find it interesting. I've had many long conversations with my Dad regarding my experiences. These kind of conversations usually  arrise when we're talking about careers ;) and i'm explaining why my world view isn't so money or material orientated.

my parents dont really seem to mind it at all. They have always had the "let him think what he wants" attitude, so i just do it openly and they accept it. my dad believes ( to a point) and my mom doesn't really care

I'm not very experienced yet, though I'm working to get there, and I've had at least one OBE (couldn't see anything, but the flying sensation was wonderful and strangely familiar.)  I'm pretty sure my guardians would think it's satanic.  I've already learned not to talk about NDE's around my uncle....He thinks they're satanic and created by "Hollywood" LOL

Opening up to my previous guardian was a huge mistake.  I have a tendency to trust people.  Just be careful about who you open up to; you can save yourself lots of trouble.

My mother 56 years old and an ap'r herself.

She does not have them as frequently as I, but she does.

So, she thinks they are "Pretty wild".

I think it would be neat to raise children with the knowledge of AP. If you knew AP as a child it wouldn't be so taboo or mystical, just a reality.

Agreed. I've told my partner that I'm going to pass this knowledge on to any children we have - and be open about my experiences with them. She's happy with this, as long as I let her also inform any future children of her Catholic beliefs too (which i'm happy with ;)).

That's really cool, raising children with the knowledge of AP.

hm...that'll give them an interesting background.

Agreed   My partner is a pretty open minded Catholic - I hide nothing about my experiences or beliefs from her - and she accepts it all :).

my mom gave me Robert Bruce's MAP: A 90 Day Guide to OBE for my birthday. I think that answers your questions.

i havent told any of my parents about AP, but i think my mom found my journal. Im thinking about telling my parents, cus my older brother past away last year  and if my parents can learn AP they can communicate with him. thats sort of why i got into AP again. It effected me a lot, his death date was 2 days before my brithday and since then I have no relgion at all anymore cus parying didnt really work and im sorta depressed   still.

I personally see no reason to tell my parents, or anyone, about AP or anything occult that I'm interested in.

For the sake of being a team player and staying on topic, if I were to tell my parents, their reactions would probably be quite different.  My dad would most likely think it's crap and a waste of time, but would also leave me to my own devices.  My mother would either be very concerned or very interested, but not in between.

I guess people know about my interest in these areas because i'm very open, and also, such things are a major part of my life - so to hide them would be quite difficult.

Stookie

For me it's a very personal thing and I've found it's pointless to talk to anyone I know about it (which is why this forum is so great for me). I have friends who think I'm waisting my time or just nod with a blank stare, not understanding at all what I'm talking about. It's tough when I have a crazy experience that stays on my mind.

PS - I live in the south... maybe people are more open minded in other areas?

Agreed, my friends think i'm a bit crazy (in a nice way   ) and it leads to a lot of drunken metaphysical and philosophical arguments/debats which we all seem to enjoy

I'm in the UK, where people seem to be pretty open anyway.

Hmm seems like some parents wouldn't mind.

I opened up to my friend about it a few days ago. I'm glad I did... she was very interested and asked a lot of questions. ^_^

IN FACT she wants to try as well. =]

I'm in the South, too; East Texas in particular.  It can suck sometimes.  And in other areas people do tend to be more open-minded, although there's always someone narrow-minded around.

I'm in a unique situation.  I'm very open with my friends about various things including my interest and views regarding the paranormal, but I definately keep a lot of things from my guardians.  They're both in a form of Pentecostalism that I consider a border-line cult, and they think liberals are taking over because people wear modern hair styles.  So yeah, I don't open up to them at all.

I should've added that the guy I live with has tried, and is trying, many of the things I've been getting into.  It's his fault I'm into this stuff at all.  So, if I tell anyone about it, it's usually him.  We don't always get along as well as we should, but I figure it's better than being a hermit and living alone all day.

The friends I have already know I'm a character, so if I told them any of the stuff I am really into, I doubt they would find it surprising.

It's interesting how like attracts like though.  The whole 4 months I've been into this stuff I've come into contact with a Reiki healer and a former chaos magician (both my age).  I imagine if you wait long enough, people come around that are interested and will listen.

Even though I don't talk directly about OBE to friends & family, I feel that it somehow makes these relationships stronger. I can't say exactly what it is, but since I've been practicing OBE I seem to be able to strengthen the proper relationships and drop harmful ones (with no hard feelings, guilt, etc.). Like I said, I feel my experiences have been personal and see no reason in sharing them with the people around me. Now if there was someone else around who was into OBE, it would be a different story. The most I do is let someone know I meditate and see if they take an interest or not, and go from there.

My friends are all open to it. My parents are skeptical and ask questions like "what do you have to gain? can you psychically study for your calculus test?"
They miss the point entirely.. it's a little sad, but at least they don't interfere.

Calculus is more important ... I think your parents just don't believe you. But there are large number of people who believe AP could be real, but feel that this world is more important. The same sort of person that desires material wealth above all else, as if money really could buy happiness. Materialistic people are what Monroe aptly called earth-life addicts. Even if they were able to get out of body, they'd just want to know how to make money off it, or write legislation to control it.

I think this is the main reason people have to re-learn how to accept that not only is this real, but they have to realize that it's worth pursuing. I think very few who know about OBEs feel that they are worth their time, or that they add anything to life.

O_O You couldn't be more correct. I know so many people who say things like "Heh... well if I had ESP, I'd be out making millions, and if I knew someone with ESP... I'd be out making THEM get millions and have some for myself..."
My English teacher said those exact words in front of my class. To my close friend I whispered, "yeah... and that's exactly why god didn't give them to her..."

When I tell my parents about it...

My mom thinks I'm absolutely crazy. She probably thinks I need mental help. :P

My dad...I don't really know. He goes "uh huh" but he doesn't say he doesn't believe me or anything. I think he has some belief. ;)

Most people just don't care.  They are comfortable not knowing anything beyond their little life and don't feel like knowing anything more because then they would have to go beyond their comfort zone.  The way I stated that sounds like I'm putting them down, but I'm not.  It's just something I've observed and sometimes marveled at.  The only time I become angry is when someone else tries to limit me or someone else in that way.
