It just seems to me that using race/gender as a basis for anything is wrong.

"Now, after all this work defending Affirmative Action, I'm going to suggest a COMPROMISE! A progressive upward-mobility program based upon socioeconomic status. It could start out as race-neutral, until/unless it became evident that all benefits were going to poor whites, which would be a MAJOR red flag because the poor in the U.S. are generally non-white, at least in urban areas. Applicants would still have to be high-qualified, or in the case of the very young, high-potential.

Guys/gals, work with me on this. What do you think? "

To me basing benefit programs more on this line of thinking would be more level.

I do not think that it is intelligence per say that is linked to ones ability to grasp the concept of OBE's or spiritualism.  I think a closer relation is ones ability for abstract thought.  It is a different kind of intelligence.
I would actually wager a guess that pure intelligence is a by-product of abstract thinking and a search for spiritualism.  I say this because I have noted that most people who are spiritually minded are on a constant search for truth, knowladge, ect.  They tend to put more into learning and often on a wider base than the average individual, because thier search for spiritualism covers a much broader range of subject than what is taught in school. Math, science, history, phylosophy, art, mythology, phsycology, medicine, physics, chemistry, and the list continues.  There is a higher rate of absorbtion of information because it is a willfull persuit and not forced teaching.
There is a difference between pure, raw intelligence and abstract thinking.  For the most part some one who is further to the side of pure inteeligence on the scale is less likely to be on a spiritual path because they believe in and only experience the physical world.  Any thing out side of that simply does not exist, because it can not be proved, and there for can not be believed.  They for the most part want to see the proof that some thing works before trying it.

Well, I for on ehave NEVER seen affirmative action work correctly or as it was intended.  The system is flawed, and was from the begining.  By saying a company or entity has to have X amount on any race to be considered  "diversified", often to recieve certain equaties from other companies, groups, or governments, is flawed.

I say this because I work for a non-profit hospital.  We are required to have a certain amount of minorities working at various pay levels.  If we don't, the company can loose very important government money, and tax breaks.  As a result un-qualified people are put in to jobs to meet quotas.  I see it every day.

This kind of stuff happens because companies, groups, and organizations, are encouraged to "diversify" with money.  No "diversity"= no money.  And I would bet that 99% of the people who sit on a board or committy see exactly that way.  Despite the way it was intended to work.

The whole thing should be tossed out the window.
The idea is good, but the working model leaves much to be desired.

I know I will catch hell for this but think about it for a minute.

It is much the same as Communisim.  In theory Communisim is the best for of Government there is.  Every one works, Every one gets paid the same, every one gets a house, medical, food, ect.  But we have all seen that the working model does not work.  Because every one get paid the same weather they work or not.  Corruption runs wild because people are trying to make money on the side.

Now back to Affirmative Action.  Because we give money, benefits, and other perks out to companies who are considered "diversified" the idea has been corrupted.  The incentive is not to be fair, or offer a level playing field.  The incentive is in the wallet.  So then why should any one be hired because of what they can do or how qualified they are.  It comes down to what color thier skin is, or what thier gender is.

So what are we going to do next?  Are we going to say that you have to have so many people with blue eyes, so many with green, or so many people with red hair, or curly hair?

It all has to end some time.

Fenris,
"Wow Cainam, you have been having this sleeping problem for a long time now havn't you, I think I remember putting together a little essay on sleeping patterns for you in a post a long time back. "

Well it's been about 4 years in the running. I know that I have insomnia but usually once I get to sleep I stay that way for at least 8 hours.  The heat generation has been something that has been going on as far back as I can remember, but it is currently the worst it has been in a long, long time.
My eating and excersize habbits really haven't changed in 10 years.  Well my eating habbits have probably been longer.  My mother often says I eat like a 10 year old.  It is only partially true.  For the most part I have one maybe two meals a day, but usually just one.  The only time it chanes is if I have several days of hard manual labor.  At those time I tend to eat more but it will taper off quickly when I stop doing as much.
Although I do not have a regular physician I have been loooked over several times in the last couple of years.  I have a yearly basic physical from the hospital and have managed to end up in the ER a couple of times.  None of the x-rays or blood work I have had done has returned anything to worry about.
Stress.  I do well at managing my stress levels.  I take enough time off of work, I don't really worry about a whole lot, and I am generally easy going.  I do however get stressed out some times and I usually know when that is and take action acordingly.  I back tends to get all freakish if I don't watch my stress.

" I think I remember you saying that you do shift work at the hospital, one might assume that the body gets used to doing shift work, but the unfortunate reality is that this is rarely the case, things often just get worse with time."

Yes I do 2nd and 3rd shift work.  This is not a problem for me since I am naturally a night person.  I simply can not function before 11am.  Even when I have mass amount of time off I stay on roughly the same schedual.  I have found the perfect time for me to get up is between 3-5pm.  I always wake up refreshed at that time.  To me that seems normal.  Getting up at 6 or 7 in the morning is just wrong on so many levels.

I do remember what every ones has suggested in the past I have tried most of it.  Most of it works for a short time but I always revert back, and some of it has not worked at all or even worsend the condition.  The hypnotherapy has been the best thing so far, it has lasted the longest.  But I don't know if it is going to do the trick any more.  I will find out after tonight (1/20) because I have another session.

When fear stricken it can help to think to your self "I am in control."  This works more so when you are dreaming, if you realize that you are anyhow.  But it can work just as wll in real life.

I have found that this works well. After repeating it enuogh times in your head you will find that you begin to say it out loud. After that you find you can talk and can then command them to leave.
--
"And about knowing exactly what they are, some spirits actually just pop out and as soon as you feel the unnatural fear you suddenly get an instant picture of the creature"
--
I know what this is like, exactly.  Question.  When in certain locations to get images and feelings from those that are just passing through, or mean no harm?

I don't have so much of a problem with with "inner chatter" so much as hearing other people's chatter.  I find often as I begin to slip I hear voices, but they are not being generated by my own mind.  At least I don't think so.  I tend to hear other peoples conversations and such.  I have heard some really interesting things that way.  The only time I can tell the difference between other peoples chatter and my own is that they never talk to me, only my internal chatter does.

The only other thing that bothers me some times when I start to drift is every so often I will hear some one yell my name.  Like really loud and really quick.  It is alost startling.

FredHedd, funny.

I'm in a 1990 Ford Probe, It runs..sorta.  I havn't had A/C for 4 years now, and my speakers were stolen about 1 year ago, along with my face plate.  It's about 250,000 miles on it, or 402,250 kilometers for you odd metric people.  If it wasn't for the bailing wire, duct tape, and bubble gum it would probably fall apart.
I was thinking of getting a new one but then I heard if you can put 1 million miles on your car Ford will give you a new one for free.  I think I am going to try that instead.

That's funny, a talking frog.

Okay try this.

So there is a Mechanical Engineer, a Electrical Engineer, and a Software Engineer driving in a car.  The car begins to knock and stutter like mad, so they pull off to the side of the road.
The Mechanical Engineer pipes up and says, "It's probably low on oil or gas, we should check all the fluids."
The Eletrical Engineer says, "No we should check the plugs, battery , and altinator, it's gotta be one of those."
The Software Engineer then replies with, "No, if we close all the windows, turn it off, wait 10-15 secs., and then turn it back on the problem should correct itself." [:)]

Comming from a stand point of often having difficulty sleeping I have found meditation is a good tool for getting some good solid rest when you are unable to sleep.

I do not think  that it would be wise to try and fully substitute meditation for sleep.  You will eventually need it.  However I have gone as many as 4 days with out sleeping and only using meditation.  Trust me you will eventually hit a point of not being physically tired but mentally.

I would commonly just meditate and bring my focus around to just resting.  Not thinking of any thing else but allowing the body to slow down and repair itself.  I would do this for a hour or an hour and a half, as needed.  I have found that the effects are roughly the same as power napping.  You're good for a few hours(6-10) before you hit another lul.

Your enviroment affects your sleeping state profoundly. Everything, from what you are wearing, to what you hear, and smell can affect your dream state.

It is very common for people to listen to various tyes of music during sleep to achieve different things.  It is all a matter of finding out how different sounds affect you personally.

The most anoying and repeating thing I have happen to me is my alarm clock.  When it goes off I while I am asleep and dreaming I will often have dreams that something else in the dream is making the noise.  Usually some thing that would not normally make noise, like a chair.  In the dream I find myself looking for the noise and track it to the object.  I usually try to get it to stop and often in the end I break the object and it never does stop making noise.  I usually wake up pretty grumpy after one of those.

I have had some really bazare dreams while falling asleep in a room with  some one playing video games.  The music and sounds from the game creep into the dream and cause some interesting side effects.

Welcome to Metaphysics! / Ghost lights
January 15, 2003, 18:49:33
Many "ghost hunters" use an EM Meter.  They are expensice as hell but they can detect even the most minor of changes in a field.

Now the only thing about that is that the field must be of the correct strength and frequency to interrupt electrical signals.  Look on the internet for EM Generators, EMP riffles, or boxes.

It is possible that the "ghost lights" are just emiting the corect frquency.  However most spirites do not emit enough of an EM field for it to be disruptive to anything.  Actually the field is less than what is normally produced by a living person.

That is why the cold theory is more accepted.

Welcome to Metaphysics! / Ghost lights
January 12, 2003, 20:04:28
From a point of experience with a form of this.  I have not exactly seen "ghost lights" but I do see things and tend to believe them to be spirites.

The physical presence of a ghost or spirite is usually occompanied by a cold feeling, or air.  Intense, localized, or directed cold can effect some electrical componants.  Extream cold can and does often suck the "life" out of batteries making all maner of things dim or flat die.  Some items do not dim or go dead because they lack the components that are normally effected or are shield against the cold.

Now I am not sure and I don't think anyone else really knows why there is almost always the presence of cold when spirites are around.  That is just currently one more thing we haven't figured out.

Welcome to Dreams! / What do you do when lucid?
January 08, 2003, 22:18:45
My first OBE was through a lucid dream.  I knew who I was because I was in my house.  The only thing that was really different was the garage.  It was the old garage and not the way it is now.  That being my room is there now and was not in the dream.

Welcome to Dreams! / Dream Pain?
January 08, 2003, 22:16:01
Breeze,

INteresting.  Now from what I gather the pain mostly results from you dreaming of having a body? SO if there was no body there would be no pain?

Now the disembodied part.  Would that also be considered the 3rd person view?  Because I have had dreams where in the 3rd person and being able to see the entire body I was in control of and still had dream pain and carry over.

I am interested because I have only just recently begain to dream regularly again.  I haven't dreamed consistantly for a long time.  So now I have more chances to "play" with it.

The book sounds interesting.  I know that before I would use dreams to work out the mechnics of certain physical action.  That's how I learned how to do back flips off of the diving board.  I have also tried to get other things to "carry over" in that way.

You could try switching different cards and colors.
Or using two decks.
This being to test for accuracy.  The more you do it the more comfortable you become with it.

You could also try getting an entirely diffent set of cards.  Like ones from a different game, Skip-o or Uno.  Or even another set of playing cards with different designs.

Ofcorse focusing more on the feeling and what it tells you would be helpful.  Then maybe testing where else it may be useful.  Oddly doing silly things, like looking for socks or something (pulling a pair out of a mess of singles), can be very helpful because it becomes automatic.  That and the more you use it and think about using for other things it will kinda branch out on its own in to other areas.  Its kinda like learning to drive.  You start slow and nextthing you now you're driving all over town.

I know from the one time that it happened for me I just kinda thought about it.  I was dreaming and fully lucid and was thinking if I might have been OBE just in the real time zone.  But right after I thought about that the vibration state started and I had to go find a place in my dream so I could lay down.

So just try thinking about going OBE when you are lucid.
